March 13, 2017: Marching

It’s that time of year. The time when all other states send representatives to the Big Dance.  Meanwhile, all Illinois schools are left out. This year is a bit different.

Yep, for the first time ever, Northwestern has made the field of 64.  I’m happy for them.

Typically, I’ll ride with the Illini come college Bball time. Many good memories provided there; they almost made it this year. They were on the bubble until the final two games of the year, when it burst.  I actually caught a bit of the Illinois Rutgers game last Saturday; it’s probably the most I’ve watched of a college basketball game all year.  They needed to beat the cellar dwellers in Rutgers, but they didn’t. That left only a deep run in the big 10 tourney as their final shot. They got blown out in the first game. Donezo.

They proceeded to can their coach.  Hopefully, the Illini can bring in a big name.  They’re fun to watch when they’re rolling.  Great home court advantage too.  It would be nice to see them back in the NCAA.  For now, we must settle for the NIT.

It’s the NIT for Illinois State. Thought they had a chance too. For a while there, you could count on one of the downstate Illinois schools to make the tourney.  This year continued that drought.  It was up to none other than the Wildcats to prevent another Illinois shutout.

Chicago’s Big Ten team as the marketing pitch goes.  Under Chris Collins, former Duke star, former Chicago suburban high school star, son of former Bulls coach Doug Collins, led them to the promised land. I remember when he came out of high school; we were hoping he’d stay local, but instead went to the Coach K factory.  Never was fond of Duke.  But that’s long forgotten now…at the very least, trumped with this accomplishment.  It’s such a huge accomplishment to finally make the tourney, that they will probably…

Lose in the first round. My bracket has Vanderbilt advancing; sorry guys. I actually have them beating Gonzaga too; probably a stretch.  I’m just happy we have some type of representation, besides of course all the Chicago prep players who will be talked about throughout March Madness.

Yes, Northwestern will be marching; the drought is over. I hope they do pull it off. I hope they can knock of Gonzaga. Wouldn’t that be something?

Yes, it’s one of the best times of the year. The time when I’ll watch more college basketball than the whole year combined.  My building is even having a kickoff party on Thursday with free appetizers, etc.  No, no alcohol; that’s a good thing.  Back in the day, I have indulged in a few during the Madness, deciding it was better to keep drinking and go home vs going back to work.  Ah, the good old days…

Maybe I can even make some noise in my bracket.  With the price going up to $20 this year, I’ll have to decide whether to donate my free money.  I have Kansas going all the way, but really could care less.

I want to see some upsets. I’d love to finally see a number one go down in the first round.  I’d love to see our Cats make a run.  It’s a fun time of year.  Sit back and enjoy.

save your 20. put 1/4 of it into a pool with your dad and bros. i’m with you on duke, ‘cept i never liked them, and still don’t. everytime i do watch one of their games, they get all the calls in the 4th and end up coming back. i know they’re perennially a good team, but constantly getting the calls taints them. i’ll be watching A LOT of the games…thursday thru sunday from like noon ’til midnite. really happy for NU, but don’t see them going too far..not with zaga in their way….sorry.

March Madness, one of the best times of year! 32 games in 2 days followed by 16 games in the next 2 days…a great weekend of college hoops. Bracket is filled out…not too many upsets this year, a few here or there but mostly chalk. 3 #1 seeds in the final four to go along with my champion, picked for me at work like a sign, and then by me…UCLA! Come on bruins, take it down. Congrats to the wildcats of Northwestern for finally making the big dance. I will be rooting for them and have them winning round 1, which they are as I type this. Either way, a great opening 4 days to the best tournament around. Goodluck to all with the brackets and bets but go UCLA!!!
