February 15, 2017: An Idle Mind

Don’t get me wrong.  I have plenty of stuff to fill my head on a day in day out basis.  That’s never a problem.  But like most things I talk about, this is related to Chicago sports.

I’m really missing the Blackhawks.  It’s been tough this week with no Hawks games.  There’s only been 1 Bulls game too with another coming Thursday night vs the Celtics.  Still, watching the Bulls isn’t as enjoyable as watching the Blackhawks.  Like I said, the Bulls make my head hurt.  There are always other options when it comes to Chicago sports, like the Bears offseason… not in the mood for that… or the Cubs and Sox in Spring Training.  I guess I’ll go with the latter, and no, not the Sox part.  I rarely feel like talking about them, unless it’s talking some crap.  And believe you me, I have a ton of that ready for any Sox fans who want it this year.

Yes, the Cubs World Series championship still remains my favorite go to subject.  I was about to flip on the World Series film again last night, when my wife popped up and asked me what the heck I was putting on the TV; I thought she was asleep… it’ll have to wait for another day.  Yes, I could watch that video over and over.  The memories of the 2016 Cubs will warm my heart until I die, but with Spring Training kicked off, it’s time to shift gears.

What else can you say about our Cubs?  They are fricking awesome.  They are built to win from now until the foreseeable future; they are the team most likely to repeat since the turn of the century Yankees… of course I would say that, but Vegas is still liking the Cubs too.  There aren’t many problems on this team to worry about… but… I’m going to give it a shot.

Starting pitching is an easy place to start.  There are potential concerns with each and every starter.  How will Lester do without his full time catcher Ross?  How will Jake handle pitching in potentially his last year in Chicago?  Will Kyle be able to repeat his phenomenal year?  Will Lackey finally pitch his age and/or finally lose it and go crazy?  How will Montgomery or whoever else will pitch in the rotation fare?  Yes, I could find some potential issues there…. none more important than health.  In the last 2 years, the Cubs have been extremely healthy.  Injuries to the rotation could cause some headaches… but that’s what we have the offense for.

The starting infield that started in the ASG is back, and that’s not including Baez!  The Mighty Schwarbino is back… of course, health comes to mind there.  How much will we miss Fowler?  I really like the combo of Almora and Jay as a concept.  Will Heyward be better?  If he’s not, at least we have guys we can play for him.  How long will that leash be, if he isn’t better?

See, I told you I could find some stuff.  Another one that runs in my head is the relationship between the players and Maddon.  I never worried about that before.  Now, after all the 2nd guessing of the World Series crazy moves, and some communication concerns voiced by Miggy, should I be?  Will the players continue to trust in Joe?  Will we?  How will that all play out in the clubhouse of a team whose chemistry was one of its strongest characteristics?  The one thing I will say about it, and I’ve said it before, is this:  That clubhouse meeting during the rain delay does NOT happen if it weren’t for Joe creating the type of clubhouse culture that he did.  I hope everybody… well screw everybody, I hope the players realize that.  If they do, this will not be an issue.

OK, see what happens to an idle mind.  You start looking for trouble.  You start digging for problems.  If you try hard enough, you can find problems anywhere you look.  Are there potential issues with the Cubs this year?  Most definitely.  Most definitely the same can be said about every major league team.  And if you stack those potential issues and questions side by side, I’ll bet on this:  The Cubs have the least problems… for now… enjoy it!  Can’t wait for Opening Day….  Go Cubs!

Have missed the Bhawks during this mandatory week off. The Bulls have been a head scratcher for most of the year as they head into their all-star break. I know Buckets is excited about going and starting, but I think it would be best for the Bulls if he doesnt play or plays very little. No need to push it.
Spring training is here. The defending World Series Champs are back, and you go it, it is the Chicago Cubs! Questions still about Maddon’s usage of chapman. Non-communication with miggy? He is a clown for even saying anything days after winning it all. Accept your role on the team and shut your mouth. Fowler gone leaving a lead off hitter hole. I think the Cubs missed him when he was out of the lineup last year. Schwarbs will get shot. No speed but he will be on base. The lineup is stacked again with a lot of big game experience now. They have been there, and the Cubs have done that. Pitching is always a question as are the potential injuries. I think the Cubs will have enough to win 90+ again. Keep things light. Do what we know they can. And have fun. The target will be on every day. Handle it and we will see the Cubs back in the playoffs. Are you ready for some baseball?
    GO CUBS GO!!!
