February 12, 2017: Spring Dreaming

posted in: Cubs | 1

Spring Training is right around the corner.  Maybe, just maybe, this will be the year the Cubs finally do it….

This could have been the headline for many years before 2017.  The eternal hope that is the essence of being a Cubs fan.  Every spring, when our boys were on the same level as every other team in the majors.  We would think of how the Cubs could do it.  We would think it has to happen eventually.  Well, you know what… it did.

And now, our lead into Spring Training 2017 goes something like this:  The Cubs are the early favorites to repeat as World Series champions.  That’s damn right.

It feels good.  I feel like I’ve talked about it a lot, and then I think, maybe I haven’t talked about it enough.  The Cubs are fricking World Series champions.  We will be able to say that until the day that the Cubs are eliminated from this year’s title contention.  And you know what… that may not happen.

Yes, so what I am saying is that I believe the hype again.  I believe this Cubs team can repeat as World Champs.  Imagine that!

I don’t want to turn into that jag off Cubs fan, but after waiting 40 years to see it happen, I’m going to enjoy every single minute of it.  I enjoyed it last year, but there was always that fear of blowing it.  I talked myself through it, all the way through the bottom of the 9th in Game 7, where we almost did blow it.  I sweated it out, stressed out… I rode that emotional roller coaster like I never have before.  And when the ride ended, the Cubs were celebrating on the field.  I thought that only happened in the movies or in a video game.

So now that the deed has been done, that most eternal quest for greatness, the world did not end; hell did not freeze over, at least I don’t think so.  And what that means, is that we’re back for more.  Baseball is around the corner.

And this year will be different, because we are defending champs.  Yeah, I wore my Cubs gear every year; it didn’t matter that they hadn’t won in my lifetime.  But now that they have, I’ll still be wearing my Cubs gear.  And you know what, it will feel better than ever.

The die hard fan was given the ultimate reward.  All Cubs fans will be beaming with pride starting this week in Mesa; it really hasn’t stopped since that late night in November.  But with the Cubs back in business, all those memories come rushing back.  We think of all that the 2016 team accomplished, and what the 2017 team can.

I was going to write about what could go wrong for the Cubs in their quest to repeat.  If you think it’s hard to win one (it was pretty damn hard), then how hard is it to win two?  Is it easier the second time around?

I always thought after we won one, I wouldn’t care.  Well, I know that’s not true now.  I think the second one WILL be easier than the first.  There’s no 108 year drought weighing on every person involved with this team of ours.  The biggest monkey in all of sports is no where to be seen ’round these parts.  There will never be pressure that matches THAT kind of pressure, so if we didn’t let the pressure exceed the pleasure then, why would it now?

Ah… spring dreaming… baseball is almost back.  It’s really the best part of the sports year.  The start of baseball… the start of the Cubs season… it doesn’t get much better than that.  I’m ready to see it.  I’m ready to hear it.  And that first game back in Wrigley, when the banner is raised, and the Cubs are announced to a full house as World Series champions, more tears will be shed.  Looking back, it’s still amazing that we climbed that mountain; looking ahead, I’m ready to do it again.  It’s almost here…

Welcome to 2017 spring training! It seems like the baseball season has rolled around very quickly. Maybe that is because the Cubs are not used to playing in October, let alone November. Something else unusual, the Chicago Cubs are the defending World Series Champs…have never heard that before. And now the Cubs are the favorites to win it all again? Get outta here. Nothing in 108 and now back to back? Wow. Expectations are high, just as they should be, but at least the ultimate pressure is gone. The Cubs are stacked again. If injuries are minimal, I see no reason why they will not be defending their title in the playoffs again this year. Looking forward to Opening Day and all the talk about defending Champs. Soak it in Cub nation! We are the Champs and will be trying to go back to back…GO CUBS GO!!!
