February 5, 2017: Sick Day

posted in: Bears | 1

It’s Super Bowl Sunday.  This is the biggest single sporting event in our country.  Some think it should be a national holiday.  Overrated?  Maybe.

It is definitely an occasion.  One that many of us get together to celebrate.  That alone makes it a fun day.  Whether it was watching at home with the family growing up, hanging out with the guys as I got older, or now, getting my family together with other family or friends.  It’s a day to celebrate.  It sucks to be sick on a day like today.

Super Bowl party plans cancelled.  Hibernation resumed.  This wasn’t the first time I’ve been sick on Super Bowl Sunday…

I can’t exactly recall what year it was, but it was back in the day; I was a kid.  It was more than 30 years ago, before Super Bowl XX, back when the Super Bowl was played in late January and not early February.  The party back then was combined with my brother’s birthday party.  I remember being rushed to the hospital.  I had asthma and was having a hard time breathing.  I remember as my Dad drove me that night.  I also remember when many years later, the doctor told me I outgrew it.  It took a long time to get that good news, but it was definitely worth it.

There was another Super Bowl not too long ago, 10 years ago to be exact, where I was feeling pretty sick… sick to my stomach.  It was of course the last time the Bears made the Super Bowl.  It’s been highlighted this entire week.  Being the 10 year anniversary, there have been many articles dedicated to what the heck has went wrong since then.  There was also some old highlights… or maybe I should just say “highlight” of that game posted on Twitter.  Yes, I’m speaking of the Devin Hester kick return to start the game.

I was living in LA during that year.  I remember watching the Bears beat the Saints in that snowy NFC Championship Game.  I remember talking with my family and friends afterwards, standing outside under a palm tree with my Bears jersey and shorts on.  I knew I would be seeing them soon.  There was no way I was going to miss being in Chicago for that game.

Of course, the last memory of the Bears in the Super Bowl was the best sports memory of my youth.  How will the Bears second visit to the big game turn out?  Well, it couldn’t have started any better.

I was back at my old apartment.  The pre-game beers were flowing.  We all had full beers for the kickoff to start the game.  Most of that beer was on the floor after Hester returned that kick to the house.  The sheer joy… all of us jumping around, beer spilling everywhere.  The confidence at that point… why would those fools kick it to Hester?  we’re going to take the Colts down?  Yes, it was all down hill after that point.

Talk about a depressed drunk.  I felt sick to my stomach.  To get to the biggest game, and to lose… I’m not sure there is a worse feeling than that.  After all, I’ve never seen the Bears lose in the Super Bowl, never seen the Bulls lose in the Finals, never seen the Cubs make the World Series, let alone lose in it.  I did see the Blackhawks lose in the Stanley Cup, but I wasn’t invested as I am now with the Hawks.  Yes, some of the Cubs losses have been brutal, and there have been many gut shot losses over the years, but I think that Bears Super Bowl loss may rank as the top.  Now I’m feeling double sick.

As chronicled in those articles I read this week, the last 10 years have been brutal for us Bears fans.  When will this sickness end?  When will our Bears return to the promised land?  When will they capture Super Bowl number two?

We’ll make the best of it until then.  We’ll try to enjoy the game, the commercials, the occasion.  We’ll be making the best of our sick day today.  Yes, there will be no big party, but there will be pizza and wings.  There will be Bears jerseys worn, a Bears sports cup that I’ll be drinking out of.  We will be representing, hoping, waiting, for our next big day as Bears fans.  31 years since our lone win… 10 years since our last appearance…  we… are… ready.  Rain, snow, or shine… sick or not… we will still be Bearing Down until that day.  Here’s hoping it’s sooner than later.  It’s time to end the current biggest Chicago sports drought, and I don’t have another 77 years to wait.

Being sick sucks, no matter the time or day. Being the Bears 10 year anniversary since last being in the Super Bowl, it is hard to look back on these last 10 years since then. The Bears have gone from bad to worse. Hopefully, they hit rock bottom and are on their way back to the top. We were at the top of the world after Hester returned the opening kickoff. It was all downhill from there. What a downer that was. Who knew we would not even be close to getting back to the big game. 31 years since winning and 10 years since being there. 2 totals that should not happen to one of the best franchises in the NFL. Just like when the Cubs or Bhawks being good makes their respective leagues better, the Bears being good makes the NFL so much better. We continue to Bear Down and support our Bears until they get back to the pinnacle. My guess is in the next 3-4 years…sooner the better!
