January 22, 2017: Happy Days

I finally like NFL football again.  The Green Bay Packers season is over.  Happy Days are here again.

Maybe you think it’s sad to relish in the defeat of another team…to be so happy to see another team lose.  Obviously you haven’t been reading long enough.

I’m not proud of it, but I can’t deny it.  I’m smiling ear to ear right now. This is what us Bears fans have. With decent seasons and playing in the playoffs becoming more and more of a blur with each passing year, we have to look forward to something.  And that my friend, is the end of Packer season.

Last week was tough; having to root for the Cowboys made me want to hurl.  Glad they’re gone; I think the Falcons would have kicked their ass too.  Spoiler alert:  I think the Falcons beat the Pats in 2 weeks.  Anyways, this Sunday went a lot better.

I was going to watch it.  My son wanted to watch Return of the Jedi. I wanted us to watch TV together.   So, we compromised, and watched the original Star Wars.  By the time the movie was over, and I flipped on the game, the Falcons were scoring to go up 30.  This was awesome.

So I watched…and thought, was it ok to start celebrating now?  My wife told me she was glad I was happy. I called my brother; it was his birthday. I told him he had a special birthday gift from Atlanta.  He hates them just like I do.  As I got ready, the clock ticked down, making this a reality. Yeah, Aikman and Buck tried to kiss Rodgers’ ass a couple more times, as the Packers lucky run had come to an end.  Rodgers is good, but he can’t play defense.

I was happy to see Peppers on the sideline hanging his head. And of course his injection buddy Matthews.  I didn’t forget how Ezekiel made him look last week; ouch!  Yeah, this Packer defense was no match for Ice and Julio. I really do believe that the best team from the NFC is going to Houston.

How good is Rodgers?  About as good as Favre so far, who was as good as our punky QB when it comes to Super Bowl victories.  They all have one for those trying to keep up.  Yeah, these Packer QBs are so good that they each only have one Super Bowl to their name.  Lots of guys have won one.  Can’t really rate them higher than those QBs with multiple rings.  The Rodgers Brady matchup was overhyped.  It was a legend against a guy trying to win his 2nd.  Glad it didn’t happen, and hope to keep Aaron at one permanently.

Yeah, the Packers ended up being overhyped too…again.  They came up short just like we had hoped.  I had to celebrate this result.  I put on a Bears t-shirt under my sweatshirt.  I put on my Bears ski cap.  My son wore his Bears hoodie.  I may not be proud of relishing in another team’s demise, but I wasn’t shy about making sure any packer backer I ran into knew where my loyalties lied.  I’ll probably wear a Bears shirt to work tomorrow too.

Yes, I liked NFL football for the first time in a long time on this Sunday.  It was like the Cardinals game the year before, and the Seahawks game the year before that.  Living in NFL prison with our Bears, watching the Packers season end is like our time out for good behavior.  I’d like to get out permanently, and get back in the game; those would bring the truly happy days.  But until then, I’ll keep cherishing these.  Packers will be watching the Super Bowl from the same place the Bears will be.  The NFL season was salvaged.  Packers Suck!
