January 13, 2017: LA Football

When I was living in LA, LA football meant USC football.  There was no NFL team in LA.  It wasn’t always like that.  It’s no longer like that.  It’s all pretty funny to me.

Being from Chicago, we are born and bred to be Bears fans.  There is no other option.  Well, there are always options, and some people defect into the worst kind of fans in all of football… Packer fans.  Others, more recently, might choose to hook their wagon to the team closest to us to the southeast, especially since they beat us in the Super Bowl.  Yes, there were Colts fans running around with their Manning jerseys after their one lucky Super Bowl win.  I hate bandwagon fans.

For a die hard, there are no other options.  Yes, we may watch other football games, and like other teams… for a game or so.  But it’s all about Da Bears… through the thick and, lately, the thin.  They’ve been in Chicago forever, and they will always be here.  There is no danger of them moving… well, I guess anything is possible, but that seems pretty far fetched for a city that can support all 4 major sports teams, including 2 baseball teams.  There is no shortage of love in Chicago.

That’s what was so funny about being out here.  Sunday morning comes along in NFL season, it’s all about football, right?  Well, sort of.  I remember coming to work on a couple of those Sundays, and wanting to hear some NFL talk on the radio prior to the game beginning.  Nope… at least not back then.  I did find a USC talk show… on NFL Sunday.  They were THE team out here.  After all, there were no NFL teams playing in LA.

Back in the day there were.  They actually had 2 teams:  the Raiders and the Rams.  The Raiders have been back and forth between Oakland a couple times, and now, may end up in Las Vegas.  The Rams… yes, I remember the LA Rams.  31 years ago on January 12, 1986, we were beating them to a pulp on the way to our first Super Bowl.  Yes, I remember the Rams well.  I remember they moved to St. Louis and became the greatest show on turf.  That team was really good, yet, still lost in the Super Bowl to the huge underdog Patriots.  They did get one… by a yard, as they beat the Titans in one of the best Super Bowls that I have ever seen.  And now, they’re back….

The Rams moved back to LA last year.  A professional football team back in Los Angeles… one of the largest cities in the country finally has an NFL team again.  And they suck.  But at least LA finally has a team again… and yet, there still is not that much interest in them.  They can’t support one NFL team, and now they have another.

Now, the San Diego Chargers are moving north to LA.  It’s hilarious to me.  Now, LA, who can’t support 1 NFL team, has 2 NFL teams.  At least the Rams get to play in the Coliseum while their stadium is being built.  The Chargers have to play in Carson.. in a stadium that only holds 26 thousand people.  There has to be at least that many people able to drive up from San Diego on a Sunday, no?

I wonder if the last straw for the Chargers owner was the home game against the Raiders late in the year.  Now I take pride in the Bears fans traveling… we go all over to support our Bears.  There is always a Chicago presence regardless of where we’re playing on any given Sunday… regardless of how good or bad we are.  But I saw highlights of that Raiders Chargers game in San Diego…  Wow… Raider fans took over that stadium, and it wasn’t even close.  Die hard respect die hard.

Die hard don’t respect a city that had no NFL teams, now has 2 teams, and still supports none.  You can find a Bears bar out here, and a Packers, a Steelers, a Cowboys… the list goes on.  The transplants still support their teams.  Who is left to support the LA teams?  At least the Rams were from here… there are still some of those out here.  But the Chargers?  I just read they flashed their new logo on the jumbotron at the Lakers Clippers game, and the fans booed.  Welcome to LA.

LA football again with 2 teams? Yeah, good luck with that. 2 bum teams in the rams and chargers. SD cant be happy losing their team. I cant imagine losing a Chicago sports team. The chargers logo and uniforms, both some of the best in the nfl, will now be gone. RIP SD chargers. Welcome to la, where football goes to die!
