January 11, 2017: Not Our Problem

posted in: Bulls | 1

The Bulls have enough problems. We don’t need any more.  With Derrick Rose in the news again recently, it feels good to say…that’s not our problem.

I don’t regret trading him. Although he has been doing ok, and the Bulls have been mediocre, I’m still glad he’s not here. Although I wish we would have got a little more back for him, at the end of the day, his drama is gone. For that, I’m happy.

It just doesn’t seem worth it. How good has he been?  17 pts 4 assists per game; that’s ok. With the advanced metrics, he’s ranked in the lower third of the league for point guards. He’s already missed 5 games this year, on pace to miss 11 games, which is close to 15% of the season. For Derrick, for the one we got used to, that would have been good. Still, to miss that many games…it’ll be close this year, but I still don’t think he’ll ever play more than 65-70 games a year. The whole will he or won’t he play got really old here. At least we knew at some point before game time.

His latest drama involves a no call no show for work. He mysteriously didn’t show up to the game earlier this week. No sign of the guy; no word. All it would have taken was a phone call…

Nobody would have disputed family first thinking. Obviously letting somebody know would have been the right thing to do. By not doing that, everything is questioned; everything is second guessed. By not putting it out there, to your employer, ahead of time, and letting them know what’s really going on, the can was opened. Derrick hasn’t been really good at decision making over the years.

The decision to talk about your sons graduation  when you haven’t even played and still have many years left. The decision to talk about a max deal 2 years before you’re eligible for one. You can read more of this in Derrick’s personal hate file.  All of this, on top of the injuries of course, helped punch his ticket out of town.

And now, he’s the Knicks problem. Will he play or not?  Mystery ailments?  Yes, he had plenty of those before the major injuries. Concentrating on self over team. Yes, that’s him. Drama unlimited. We know. Now they know.  It wasn’t always like that.

His first years in the league were awesome for the most part. That seems so long ago.  Now, Derrick with all this baggage, brought to the forefront by another stupid move, will come with him to his next team. He will still probably get a max deal. It makes it hard to feel sorry for the guy, even if he is going through some stuff.

When everything was breaking, first thing I thought was, I hope he’s OK. That’s the same thing I think when I deal with a no call no show.  There are people who are genuinely concerned for your well being, regardless of the hard feelings. But I should have known better.

It was just another signature Rose move. What used to be his speed and power to the rim, his constant display of putting his self above all is now what he’s known for.  Some may say if you don’t put yourself first, who will. I’d like to think that some put others first, like teammates for example. But you know what?  It doesn’t really matter any more, because he’s not our problem.
