January 4, 2017: Doggie Dog World

I know I just said the Bears season is over, but I’m here to talk more football.  I know I said I hate a lot of the other NFL teams, but we’re going to talk about them.  It’s time for some playoff picks.

I was sitting here… thinking… that’s scary… about a new feature.  So I flipped through the features I already started, and in some cases, completed.  My ode to the 85 Bears and 91 Bulls is complete.  The result was 23 & 16 blogs respectively.  My fantasy football feature is long dead after 31 posts.  The Hate Files are alive and kicking at 26… waiting to drop the bomb at 27.  Some other lesser known features include the Players Club with 11 posts and the Lists with 7 posts.  That leaves one feature left; that’s where we’re going with today’s post.

It’s the ATS feature.  This will be the 15th post in that feature.  It brings me back to a happier time… OK, maybe it wasn’t always so happy, but a time where I had money to burn… I mean, money to gamble; I might as well have burned it.  But it was a lot of fun.  I still glance at the lines here and there.  I didn’t get into any ATS picks during the 2016 regular season.  I did pick all of the Bears games… but they technically weren’t official ATS picks, so I will be ignoring them for the purpose of this feature.  (For the record, I went 5-7 on the 12 Bears games that I did previews on this year; better than 3-13!)

So, for a little historical perspective, let’s look at my posted ATS plays over the years in my blog:

2015 NFL Playoffs     8-3          2015 NFL Regular Season     17-17          2016 NFL Playoffs     4-3 (I missed the divisional week)

Overall, not too bad.  29-23 on posted plays.  12-6 ATS in the playoffs the last 2 years, which is why I thought it’s the perfect time to make another ATS entry.  It’s time for the 2017 NFL playoffs, and I got picks.  I wonder if the title of my blog will come into play…

OAK +4 @ HOU

I’m pissed that Carr got hurt.  I’m not devastated… like someone I know.  I got a call on Christmas Eve, just as I was walking into my parents’ house.  It was my friend, the die-hard Raider fan.  He was frantic…  they just went to commercial, Carr is hurt, it looks bad, this can’t be happening.  Unfortunately for him, it did happen.  A promising season up in smoke.  I can definitely relate.  I’m thinking Derrick Rose, Game 1 vs Sixers…  the Bulls never recovered from that one; I hope the Raiders can.  With the Bears out, I wanted them to go all the way.  Don’t think that will happen this year, but I do think they can get past Houston.  Funny… I wondered why the Bears didn’t draft a QB late in this year’s draft, like the one who will be starting for the Raiders in this one:  Connor Cook.  Wonder how he’ll do.  He can’t be worse than the million dollar man Brock from the Texans, who was benched, but now, will be brought back as a starter in this game.  If Cook can just hold his own, and not turn the ball over, I like the Raiders to win… or at least cover that 4.

DET +8 @SEA

Yes, the Lions… the sad ass franchise that has never won a Super Bowl, that always chokes down the stretch, including this year, blowing their division lead to the Cheeseheads.  I don’t think they’ll win… they may.  But that 8 points is too much, even though it is in Seattle, with Stafford at QB for Detroit, and the Seahawks with all that playoff experience.  I like a close game.  I’m not gushing over the Seahawks… I don’t think they’re as good as they’ve been.  Plus, I think the Lions will release some frustration and play their asses off in this one.  Take the points.

MIA +10 @PIT

The Miami Dolphins coached by… yeah, Adam Gase, are one of the surprise playoff teams.  Honestly, I don’t even know who’ll be starting at QB; I do know they have a pretty good RB.  And everybody knows about Pittsburgh.  At home, the Steelers should get all the calls, like they normally do.  So while Ben, Bell, and Brown are going crazy, the refs will make sure nothing stands in their way.  We’ve seen this before.  But, in order to guarantee the Steelers a win, they must allow the Dolphins to cover.  OK, that may sound a bit crazy, but it sure seems like that’s how some games go.  Anyways, I’ll just shut up and take the points, like I do most of the time, especially in the playoffs.

NYG +5 @GB

You didn’t think I was going to take the Packers did you?  Hahaha…  This is why I don’t gamble any more; separating the head and the heart is too difficult for me.  However, I’m thinking Vegas makes it a clean sweep of the dogs this weekend.  The Gmen have beat some good, some great teams before.  They have a spot in my heart for that, like when they beat the Pack in the playoffs and undefeated Patriots in the Super Bowl.  They definitely have it in them.  And besides New England, I don’t think there’s a hotter team right now… maybe KC.  Green Bay has been on fire.  They’ve won out, just like daddy Aaron said they would; isn’t that special?  F him and F the Pack.  Tell me who will be playing CB for them this weekend against Odell and the NYG WRs and I’ll give you a prize.  Can you say shootout?  Taking the points, although if anybody has worse home field referees than the Steelers, it’s the Lambeau zebras.  Watch out for a call that screws the Giants, but still, don’t sweat it, and take the 5 points.

OK.  That was fun.  If I was in Vegas this weekend, I’d play all of the above.  I’d actually money line all the dogs, parlay them, tease them, whatever… It’s always fun betting on the underdogs.  I love it.  This first weekend of the 2017 playoffs… it’s a Doggie Dog World!  Enjoy.

Tough break, no pun intended, for oakland. Would have loved to see them go far or even win it all. Opening wild card weekend, so here go the picks…

Oak+3.5-yes, I know they are now starting a rookie qb, but the texans are no better with either of their bums. Give me the better team all year with points and dont be surprised if oakland wins straight up.
Det+8-tough call here as it is never easy playing in seattle, but they are not the same team without lynch at rb. They are down a wr and signed hester for special teams. The lions blew away the nfc north and snuck in thanks to the skins blowing their home game. They should be upset and ready to cover this game, if not steal it late.
Pit-10-line seems too big to bet mia, even with a backup qb starting for them. Pit has home field and too much talent not to take advantage of miami. Would not mind seeing Pit win it all, but they start by pounding the fish.
Nyg+4.5-eli and the gmen come to play and outshoot the cheesegirls. 2hot teams but this should be close.
