January 3, 2017: Bears Out

posted in: Bears | 1

Whew… another rough season is in the books after Sundays’ loss to the Vikes.  Although I have felt worse after other seasons, this one is officially THE worst 16 game season for our Bears.  The 3-13 record is now history; it’s the wrong type of history that the Bears have been writing.

But according to Alshon, that will all change next season  He predicted the Bears will win the Super Bowl next year; well, hell, let’s start the parade now.

I have no problem with people being confident.  In fact, if you don’t think you’re going to win every game, then why play it.  I understand that mind set has to be there.  But to predict a Super Bowl victory… coming off a 13 loss season…  that just sounds flat out stupid.

And look at the guy saying it.  Here’s a guy who can’t even stay on the field for the 16 regular season games every year.  He always has this injury or that injury; he was known for his “soft tissue” injuries.  He didn’t miss too many games to injuries this year… finally, but then he does something else stupid.  Knowingly or unknowingly, cheater or idiot, Alshon cost himself, and the team, 4 games this year.  I hope he didn’t get paid for those games.  Speaking about paying him…

It’s that time of year again when we need to determine what to do with Alshon.  His talent on the field is unquestionable; key words ON THE FIELD.  It’s his injuries, his decision making, his desire to be here, and now his mouth, that forces the Bears to second guess resigning him.  I wouldn’t.  I wouldn’t let him walk either.  I’m not sure there is a better franchise tag candidate than him.  I’m not sure how many times you can tag a player in a row, but I know we can do it this year.  Tag the man.  I need to see a full season out of him before committing long term time and money.

That’s just one player…  there are other decisions to be made on this team.  Although I’m sure everyone is wishing for it, the ownership situation will not be changing any time soon.  The next level is Bears management and coaching; I think we’d all be up for some changes there.  I think Pace and Fox deserve another year.  Pace has hit on some draft candidates, and has brought in a couple successful free agents.  And Fox, well, I was so happy when we got him… I didn’t know his personality and how we talks to the media, and the mystery he constantly wants to portray; that’s the picture we get from him.  But… that’s not the most important thing.  Wins and losses are.  Based on that, he should be gone, but wait, there’s more.

Before we move forward with the ax, let’s take a closer look.  After year 1, 6-10, we were satisfied; we felt like we saw progress, and were excited for this year.  Year 2 was an absolute bust; no arguing there.  Why was it a bust?  I do believe that the team Pace & Fox took over, was lacking in a lot of areas; it wasn’t the same type of situation when Trestman (hate to even say his name) took over.  He still had some Lovie guys; he had some areas of strength.  These guys really did not.  So after building a bit in year 1 and winning some games, the building continued.  However, injuries halted that progress.  There was no way this Bears team with its lack of depth could compete on a week to week basis with so many injured players… so many 3rd and 4th string guys on the field.  Yet, they did compete; the record didn’t reflect that.  That’s the main reason I say give him another year.

I do think keeping some level of continuity is important too, although another year in the dumps, regardless of reason, will make it tough to continue down the same path.  I still do think some changes should be made, most notably at the OC position.  With Mike McCoy available, and his ties with Fox, he may be coming here…  not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing.  All I know is that we need to run more, especially with the QB situation the way it is.  By the way, leave Fangio and the defense alone.  And by the way, we’ll talk about the QB situation later; that’s one thing that has been in common the past 7 non-playoff years.  Anybody else see the problem here?

Anyways, it will be interesting to hear what’s said in the end of year press conferences with Pace and Fox.  I’ll be back for more Bears talk then.  For now, the 2016 season is finished…thankfully; Bears out!

Thank you Alshon for your confidence and belief in this Bears team, but please forgive us for not believing you. The Bears just wrapped up their worst 16 game season ever. They have no answer at qb. The coaching staff seems a bit lost. Not to mention that you may not even be here next year. Words of wisdom, by Alshon. Tag that man in 2017, again. Make him play a complete season before the Bears even think about paying him big, long-term dollars. This man cannot stay on the field. When he is, he is a force and the best weapon the Bears have. I agree that he is needed so put one more franchise tag on him before anything else. Who else do the Bears have to franchise? Exactly.
So it seems that the Bears took a step backward this year, but did they really? Maybe the coaching staff got everything they could out of this team. The Bears were ravaged by injuries since the start. Guys who would be lucky to be on special teams were starting and playing big minutes on both sides of the ball. The depth and talent were not there. So lets give the staff one more year. The D made some strides and with more talent and less injuries, they could be top 5 next year…heard it here first! That brings us to the O where the biggest question remains…qb. Once that is decided, we shall see what this Bears team will be in 2017. Will they have a shot or more of the same? Lets hope pace and staff make some good choices, with current Bears, free agents, and draft picks. BEAR DOWN!!!
