December 26, 2016: Three and Holding

posted in: Bears | 1

It’s been a historic year for our Bears; the wrong type of history, but hey…  The Bears got pounded on Christmas Eve by the Redskins, leaving that win total at three and holding.  If the Bears don’t win their final game of the year, this year will be historically bad.

An 18.75% winning percentage is what 3-13 adds up to.  That would be good for the worst winning percentage since 1969!  That year, the Bears went 1-13.  It wasn’t until 1978 that the NFL went to a 16 game schedule.  So as far as 16 game seasons go, this year will go down as the Bears worst.  Unless they can win next week…

2002 was a 4 win year.  That was the year they played in Memorial Stadium at the University of Illinois.  The Bears actually started that year 2-0!  For some reason, Dick Jauron made it through this year without being fired.  Instead, he was gone after the following year, where the Bears went 7-9.  Go figure.  There were two other years, back to back in 1997 & 1998, where the Bears ended the year at 4-12; talk about a rough two years.  The last 2 years of the Dave Wannstedt era were complete.  I remember not liking him… although he is somewhat entertaining now on the Score talking Bears football.  Maybe the Bears can win this last game and finish with 4 wins; does it matter?

It does matter from a draft perspective; I think I heard that a loss would secure the #3 pick.  A win may drop us down to #6.  For that reason… no, we’ve been over this before.  I cannot root for a Bears loss.  It would be nice to win the last game of the season.

I know it doesn’t seem like much… wait, no, it’s not much, but still… a win is a win is a win.  Give us one more happy Sunday this year.  Back to last Sunday…

I watched bits and pieces as I got ready for Christmas Eve.  I think it was the first or second Bears drive.  They got to the 5 yard line, and decided to pass the ball twice.  For the life of me, I can’t understand it.  Howard was gashing them on that drive; why not feed him?  They settled for a FG attempt, and that was blocked.  That’s the Bears in a nutshell.

Another time later in the game on the goal line, they brought in Langford for the short TD.  And no, this has nothing to do with my fantasy league; I’m out of the playoffs.  But, why wouldn’t you bring in Howard for that TD?  You don’t feed the guy when you should, and when you’re ready to punch it in from the 1 yard line, you bring in somebody else?  What gives there?

I like the fake punt that gave us a first down, but the picks… oh, all the picks.  5 total for Barkley in this one.  Turnovers period have been a problem for the Bears on both sides of the ball.  I read a few things…  Since the beginning of last year, that one Chiefs CB, Peters, has 13 picks.  In that same time frame, the Bears entire defense has 15.  Then there’s the -16 turnover ratio… Turning the ball over too much, and not getting enough turnovers, equals those 3 wins I’m talking about.

Back to Jordan Howard for a minute… one of the bright spots this year.  If it weren’t for the Cowboys RB (and their OL), Howard may be in discussion for rookie of the year.  He only needs 61 yards in the final game to set the Bears franchise record for a rookie RB.  I still can’t understand why they don’t feed him the ball in the red zone….  something else I read.  Barkley has 17 passes inside the 10 yard line; Howard… 14 carries.  Why Dowell why?

And why did the Bears draft Brandon Hardin over Kirk Cousins?  He looks like he’s finally arrived.  The Redskins may not make the playoffs, but at least they don’t have to worry about their QB situation… as long as they keep Cousins, which I would imagine is a slam dunk.

I can’t believe I actually thought the Bears would win this game.  With everything to play for, the Redskins cruised.  I wonder how that final game against the Vikings will go…  at least the season will finally be over.  Will it end up being a truly historic season?  See you Sunday.

I actually like the Bears to win this Sunday. As you said, not sure that will be beneficial for them and their draft pick, but finishing the season on a winning note would get this crucial Bears offseason and 2017 off to a good start.
Howard has been aWesome. I hope he doesnt take a step back next year like langford did this year. I mean, that was part of the reason forte was let go, right? Maybe it will all pay off. The Bears need to start moving in the right direction. 2 guys who should not be a part of it is a certain qb and offensive coordinator. No waiting after the season, make the decision and cut ties.
3 wins or 4 wins, which would you rather have? Either way, it has been a season to forget, but one that will be remembered as a turning point for this franchise. BEAR DOWN!
