December 21, 2016: QB Questions

posted in: Bears | 4

Coming off a hate file, I patiently wait to write the next one.  Like they say in my son’s Ninja Turtles book, it’s going to be epic!  That is, if he’s not on the Bears roster next year.

For the purpose of today’s edition, we’ll assume he is gone. I’m hoping that is a safe assumption.  What comes next in the Bears QB drama?  It’s that problem that they can never quite solve. You think there is any correlation between that and the almost 33 years since they’ve last won a Super Bowl?  You’re damn right there is.

Yes, we had McMahon, but ever since he was slammed to the turf illegally, the QB position has been a problem.  Isn’t it ironic that the team responsible for that has lucked out with 2 HOF QBs since then?  I can’t wait for those tables to be turned. Karma, you may say, will be a bitch.

Until then, the QB questions in Chicago are starting back up. Back up….I didn’t even mean to do that leading into the current QB, Matt Barkley.  Unfortunately, I think that’s all he will be.

Being the QB starved franchise that we are, anything positive we see from the position gets us excited.  We’ve gotten excited before about backups. Kyle Orton comes to mind, as we were chomping at the bit to get rid of Grossman. He did ok for a bit. Then there was McCown, who we thought could have led #6 out of town years ago. I’ll tell you what. That year, we should have stuck with him.  For that short time period, he was doing more than ok.

But that’s really the key…that timeframe.  “A bit”, “a short time”…same words we can justify using for Barkley.  He’s been just fine this year.  And as we transition to our next QB, he could potentially help there; starting the season as QB, or at least creating some good competition with the rookie. We are drafting a QB right?

Either 1st, 2nd, or 3rd round…I better hear a QBs name called when they announce the Bears draft pick next year.  Depending on how ready to start from day one he is, Barkley could help…in the short term.  I just don’t see him as a long term answer. The Bears need a plan at QB. It starts with drafting one.

Take a chance. I still don’t understand why we didn’t take one last year, or the year before that, in the first couple of rounds. This new regime had to realize the mistake made signing the most overpaid QB in football to a long term deal. This new QB plan needed to start then.  We could have been ahead of the curve; we could have been proactive about it, instead of now, having really no choice. And no, Romo is not the long term answer either.

Could he be the guy that bridges the gap next year? Sure, but at what cost?  It all comes down to how close they think this team is from competing. I really don’t think we’re that far away, but then again, I am the ultimate optimist.

Which route will the Bears take?  This decision could determine the next handful of years of our football existence.  They should have done a lot of homework already with this year being in the tank early.  I want to see a young QB at the helm. I want to know what playoff football feels like again.  I want the Bears to be back.  What do you think Santa?

QB should ALWAYS be home grown. Meaning that you should draft a QB in the 2nd round or later. Work with him for about 3-5 years. Develop skills and relationships, let him grow naturally. But that not happening now; draft and then play within two years!! Look at the last two team that did it right; Brady for the PATS and Rogers for fudge Packers….grow them this way and you will have a franchise QB for years!!

Its not hard…just have to have some patience!

I like Barkley. In my opinion, he should be 4-0. The untimely drops, the incorrect play calling…..not his fault. I do like drafting a QB. I like a couple of them. I like the kid from Washington, I like the kid from Penn State. But I think that whoever they decide on should be drafted and given a chance in training camp and pre-season to unseat Barkley. And if not, groom them to be the next QB.

Bears need a franchise qb…bottom line. How do they get that, by drafting one this year and hoping he grows into it. Bringing romo in or having barkley here is fine, but they would not be franchise qbs. Can both get the job done and win some games? Yes, but getting the ultimate win in the last nfl game of the season, not so sure. Either way, whoever the Bears go with, drafting a qb is necessary. Maybe having romo in front of him next year would be beneficial in the growth and maturity aspect. Barkley has been in the leagues a few years and knows how to be a backup but not the guy. Put in the work, draft a qb no matter what round, and start the steps toward making this Bears franchise relevent again. BEAR DOWN!!!
