December 19, 2016: No Man’s Land

posted in: Bulls | 2

Well, it’s about damn time.  The Bulls finally put it all together for 4 quarters and blew out Detroit on Monday night in the United Center.  Yes, it took 70+ % shooting in the first half alone, over 80% in the 1st quarter, but we’ll take it.

The Bulls had been sliding.  I’ve been trying to avoid talking about them.  After the early 21 point lead against the Wolves last week, the Bulls were outscored by 63 points in the past 10+ quarters.  The comeback loss to the Twolves, and 2 losses to the Bucks; 1 the embarrassing kind.  It was ugly.

Monday night was ugly for the opponent finally.  It was a much needed win, ending our losing streak, and beating a division foe that had beaten us earlier on their home court.  McDermott and Mirotic actually hit some shots.  Are we going to be able to count on them doing it consistently?

There is still much skepticism with this Bulls team.  They are in NBA no man’s land.  They are experienced enough to beat young teams, but too old to keep up with them.  They have some star power, but unfortunately 2/3 of them are past their prime.  That star power is not enough to keep up with other teams’ stars.  We pressed the reset button at the coaching level, but that didn’t work.  How do we escape this place?

It’s time to take a page from the Cubs book; it’s time for Reinsdorf to do with the Bulls what he’s started to do with the Sox.  It’s time to blow this thing up.  The way they handled this off season, is very comparable to the way the Sox have handled the last few off seasons.  Going out and signing guys past their prime, or fringe guys that you think you can mix together in a hat, and pull out a title.  They grabbed some popular names to put some bodies in the seats.  They did it to make it interesting… trying to catch magic in a bottle for one year, not building towards anything.  And it’s the they I’m talking about, that need to be the first guys that go.

I don’t know who the Theo version of the NBA is, and really, I don’t know if the rebuilding can be done in the NBA as it is in the MLB.  There is no exact science either way.  It’s not all their fault.  We did have injury problems with our #1 star, that isn’t anybody’s fault.  But how they switched gears from that, and the decision to fire another coach, this time a good one, was the start of the downfall.

Drafting hasn’t necessarily been their strong suit either.  We lucked out with the #1 pick that year to get Rose, and got a diamond in the rough with Butler, but their recent picks haven’t panned out… yet.  Taj GIbson, the year after Rose was a good one, but then it gets ugly.  James Johnson, Kevin Seraphin (traded for Hinrich (good!) & Vladimir Veremeenko (who?), Marquis Teague, Erik Murphy, Tony Snell, and Cameron Bairstow all represent misses in the draft.  Malcolm Lee and Norris Cole were packaged for Mirotic.  Gary Harris and Jusuf Nurkic were moved for McDermott.  Bobby Portis, Paul Zipser, and Denzel Valentine are still yet to be seen.

I don’t blame them for trading Rose.  I think the Rondo and Wade acquisitions were band aids.  Please, please don’t acquire the crazed man who is Demarcus Cousins.  It’s time to dump, and completely rebuild… get young!

Until then, we will continue in NBA limbo.  We’ll continue counting the years since the last title.  We’ll continue the frustrating losses and the spinning of our wheels.  Start with replacing GarPax, trade Wade and Rondo and anybody not named Butler to get picks or some young talent, and get rid of Hoiberg.  There’s no time like the present… new year’s resolution maybe?  Go Bulls…

Bulls are definitely in no man’s land. Who knows how to get them out of it, but something needs to be done. This is an average squad that has no chance of winning it all. If that is the ultimate goal, then things need to happen to push toward that. Butler is the guy on the Bulls but even he should be available for the right price. The nba is all about the super teams right now. Who can the Bulls pair with Butler? Wade and rondo are not those guys. Fredberg needs to be gone. Garpax can take a hike, too. Unfortunately, I do not see any of these things happening any time soon. The Bulls will continue to be average, make the playoffs, and then bow out to better teams. When will we see real change? It should start now or as soon as possible. Just do it Bulls!

What did we expect, a playoff team? Money wasted on former NBA stars, when it could be spent on trading players for draft picks….so sad.
