December 8, 2016: Loving The Enemy

posted in: Bears, Blackhawks, Bulls, Cubs, White Sox | 2

Isn’t that what we’ve been told to do?  Easier said than done, that’s for sure.  When it comes to our sports teams and the teams they play against, we certainly make our enemies along the way.  As evident in the feature right here on this very website, the Hate Files are dedicated to our sports enemies.  Sometimes the lines get blurred though…

How many times over the years has a player you loved ended up playing on a team that you hate?  I’m not going to do any research on this one, but just off the top of my head.  I remember some of the 85 Bears playing elsewhere.  Elsewhere doesn’t have to be a team that we hate, like Wilber Marshall to the Redskins or Richard Dent to the 49ers.  But sometimes, our beloved end up playing for the enemy.  Like when Steve McMichael and Jim McMahon played for the Packers.  I would love to erase those images from my memory… wipe my eyes blind from them.  But it happened, and you know what… now, looking back, it doesn’t make me love Mongo or the Punky QB any less.

Of course the reason for this topic is the news that Dexter Fowler has signed with the St. Louis Cardinals.  Damn.  Any team, any team but them.  It will not be fun seeing you go, we go suit up for the red turds.  Do I instantly hate him now?  No.  Just like the 85 Bears, the 16 Cubs are champions.  Everybody from that team is immune to it.  They can go wherever, whenever, without feeling the hate.  It won’t be easy or fun to see him play for the enemy, but it will be accepted.  I love Dex.  He was an integral part of the championship team.  From one of the best earliest moments when he surprised the team in spring training, to one of the best latest moments with the leadoff HR in Game 7.  Dexter Fowler will always have a place in my heart.  I will just ignore these next couple years.

He deserves to get his big pay day.  I’m happy for him.  Playing for the Cardinals, the hated Cardinals, in our division, will make it hard to ignore.  Nothing against you Dex, but I hope your best years are behind you.  I hope you have a great season except for when we play you.  I hope you are the only bright spot on a last place Cardinal team.  This doesn’t have to be that painful.

Was it more painful when the Blackhawks were eliminated last year when the game winning goal in Game 7 was scored by an ex-Blackhawk?  Troy Brouwer did those honors, and at the time, it felt pretty bad.  Although anybody that would have scored that goal, like say Alec Martinez for example, would draw some hate.  Do we hate Troy less because he played for us?  I say yes.  Again, he was a champion back in 2010 with the Blackhawks.  He is somewhat immune to that.

Anybody that has won a championship in Chicago will always be legendary.  I can’t think of anybody who doesn’t fit that description.  MJ playing for the Wizards was kind of painful, but he’s MJ… and it was the Wizards… have fun with it MJ.  Pippen playing for the Rockets?  No problem.  Horace did come back and haunt us with Orlando in 1995; I did hate him for a bit there.  But they lost in the Finals, and he was part of 3 championship teams, so I have nothing but love for him.

As far as guys who haven’t won here… well, that’s a different story… sometimes.  I will always love Jo, but DRose… he made the Hate Files.  I did see some old pictures of him yesterday that brought me back… and one day maybe I won’t feel that way, but now, he’s on the list.  When good old number 6 leaves, no love loss… regardless of who he ends up playing for.  There are some guys that fit that description too.  Then there are those guys who used to play for the enemy then come and play for us, but I have to stop now… that sounds like a whole separate blog.

So good luck Dex… personally.  I hope your team sucks and doesn’t win 80 games this year, but I hope you do great.  I hope you do great, except for when you play us, when I hope we strike you out a bunch of times.  But enjoy your money, and the rest of your career.  You will always be a champion.  You will always be in the heart of this Cubs fan.  In your specific case, it’s OK to love the enemy.

Even though I knew it was coming, sorry to see Dex go. He went, the Cubs went. What a run he had for the Cubs! He was a great leadoff hitter and solid defender, plus he seemed to be an important guy in the clubhouse and off the field. He now gets his big payday, but unfortunately it is with the red turds. He deserves it, and I am sure he will make the Cubs pay once or twice, but as long as it isnt too hurtful, it will be all good. He is forever a Champion with the Cubs. I wish him the best going forward except when he plays us. Thanks Dex!
