This should go without saying. I think I probably have blogged about this before, but never under this specific title. When watching our teams, there should never, ever be a situation where we root for them to lose. Yes, it may benefit the team long term if that happens, but you can never root for that. Can you? Never that!
This has come to the surface this year with our Bears. It is a highly debatable topic on sports radio. Many people want the Bears to lose now because that will yield a higher draft pick. Smart? Maybe. True fan?
I can’t root for the Bears to lose. I can become disinterested, and not pay as much attention as I normally do… sure. I can be not as pissed off with a loss as a fan, understanding the long term benefit; there’s that whole silver lining for me, and you know how much I love that. But to start a game against an opponent and hope the Bears lose; that’s not in my DNA.
You’re going to tell me this week against the Niners in the Toilet Bowl, I’m supposed to root for Colin and the Niners to beat my Bears? Never that! After all, how much can the Bears really hurt themselves here?
By losing, they improve draft position, but they keep that losing culture going strong on the team. There are pieces on this team. We still need a lot of pieces, but there are some guys that may be here for a while. It would be nice to get a couple more wins this year for them. Give them a taste of it. Give them some sort of momentum heading into next season. I believe in that.
By winning, you take baby steps towards that winning culture. How much can a 4-12 team be better than a 2-14 team? Well, 2 games, that’s how much. But back to that whole draft position…

The Browns have the first pick locked up, and they, most likely, will take a QB. If the Niners stay at 2, don’t think they’ll go for a QB, will they? If the Jags surpass us, they definitely will not draft a QB. Speaking about QBs, how many franchise guys are out there this year?
That is still yet to be determined. Through the post season college games, the combine, the private visits and interviews, there will be some cream that rises to the top. Is the Bears taking a QB in the first round a MUST? Or is that 2nd round pick, and approximately 33rd overall pick, OK to take a shot? What about that whole drafting best player available?
The Bears do need multiple pieces, but they need a QB more than anything. Will they have a Romo to bridge the gap? One way or another, the Bears need to draft one. We should have already drafted one in the past couple years; he could already be gaining experience under his belt. But no… the most important position in football has been neglected by Emery, and now Pace. It is the biggest mistake in the Pace era; we know what the biggest mistake in the Emery era was.
Wherever you sit on that fence, it’s clear to me who I am rooting for each and every Sunday regardless of long term effect. We Bear Down…. always! We never hope to lose. Do you think the players hope to lose? That’s horrible to think about. Again, it may not hurt as much to lose these type of games, but again, what is that telling you about an individual’s character? Nobody should like to lose period, and if you’re OK with that, you got problems, especially being a player on that field. If you’re OK with losing, maybe you shouldn’t be here.
And if you’re OK with rooting against the Bears, whether it’s for draft pick purposes, confidence pool purposes, or fantasy purposes, you got issues. That’s why I couldn’t bet against the Bears; I couldn’t pull myself to root against them, even if there was money on the line. Maybe that’s just me, but so be it. There are some things that I can change about myself; this is not one of them. I will never root for the Bears to lose; never that! Go Bears!!!

The 1-10 9ers vs the 2-9 Bears in Soldier Field and the line is a pick em? Wow, Bears get no 3 point home field advantage because there is none and has been no home cooking for the last 2 years…embarrassing! There is no guarantee that the Bears losing this week or every game from here out will get them their franchise qb. Qbs in the first round is hit or miss, just like most rounds after that. The Bears need to get lucky with their picks, but luck does not play a role in creating a winning culture again. A front office and coaching staff leadership team, leaders on and off to field, and of course flat out winning does. So start this Sunday by keeping colin on his knees all game, not just for the anthem. Actually, get him on all 4s and treat him like a dog! Bears might not be dogs this weekend, but it sure feels close. Winning cures a lot, so go get #3 on the year! BEAR DOWN!!!
