August 9, 2014: Preseason Football

I don’t watch it.  There are some preseasons that I don’t watch one snap.  That’s pretty amazing because of my love for DA Bears.  The preseason just doesn’t mean much.  Yesterday was no exception; I didn’t see any of the game or the highlights.  If I’m going to watch preseason football, I’d rather be at the game.

I’ve been to a few preseason games; that’s the best way to enjoy a preseason game.  We got some free tickets one year from a guy at work, and sat about 20 rows up in the end zone for a preseason tilt vs Buffalo.  Two years ago I went to the Bears first preseason game vs Denver.  I remember some stuff from that game: a lightning storm, peyton manning’s first game with Denver, booing Caleb Hanie when he came on as the backup for Denver, and after a few beers, buying my 4 month old son some overpriced Bears gear at Soldier Field.  My favorite memory of a preseason game came about 15 years ago vs Arizona.  There were about 8 of us that attended that game.  I don’t recall anything that happened during the game on the field; I do remember other details.  We had enjoyed some pregame beverages at a local watering hole before jumping on the Cermak bus to get to the game.  We never made it to our seats.  The first beer stand we saw as we entered the 100 level was where we “watched” the entire game from.  The walk/bus ride home was interesting to say the least; 8 drunk guys walking down the street, and boarding a bus.  We got kicked off the bus… thankfully it was close enough to walk home.  The best part about going to a preseason game is that the game doesn’t matter.  You can really enjoy yourself, while casually watching the game.  It’s not like a regular season game, where I’m hanging on every snap.  After all, the results don’t matter at all.

What was the 1985 Bears preseason record?  1-3.  Yep, that was a tell tale sign of things to come.  Not!  Our other Super Bowl year of 2006, we went 2-2.  So a Bears win yesterday vs the Eagles doesn’t mean much.  However, there is something else the preseason is good for:  gambling!

When I was gambling, it was preseason football where I usually did the best.  The games went pretty much according to plan, with first stringers playing a series, then 2nd stringers for the rest of the first half, then the 3rd stringers.  If you knew about the depth of each team, which I did by reading local newspapers, you could do pretty well.  The most important part of preseason wagering was the QB situation.  How were the 2nd and 3rd string QBs?  The team I would bet against the most in the preseason were the Colts when they had Peyton Manning.  Do you remember the backup QBs when he was there?  Exactly.  I made some pretty good money during the preseason, only to throw it all away during the regular season.  It was fun while it lasted.

Another reason to watch preseason is for fantasy football purposes.  You want to find that deep sleeper?  You think you can make some roster predictions?  Here’s your chance to get a step up in your league with a few choice picks mid-late draft.  With the increase in popularity in fantasy football, there is a reason to watch almost EVERY game that’s played.

For me, it all comes down to the regular season.  I’ll probably tune in for some of the preseason, but it’s not like I’m going to plan my day around it, like I do for every Bears game during the regular season.  I figure we got 16 weeks of this coming up, no need to rearrange plans at the end of the summer to watch some meaningless games.  Of course if I’m sitting at home with nothing to do, which is pretty rare nowadays, I’ll flip it on.

So get all worked up for the NFL season by watching the preseason; I don’t need the warm-up.  I’m game ready come week 1.  No need to celebrate some meaningless wins.  I’m not battling for a spot on the couch with anyone.  I’m no longer wagering and I have my fantasy football plan already in the works.  Enjoy it, and as always, go Bears; see you week 1.
