I’ve been creeping back into it. Catching more of the Bulls and the Blackhawks games lately. With both teams scheduled to play on Saturday night, it was decision time. How would I work this?
Easy start. Blackhawks game was on before the Bulls. But when the Bulls started, I flipped to them. They had another good start. Wade, Butler, Lopez… this Bulls team is growing on me. Still have lots to prove, but I was impressed with another big early lead against a very good Clippers team. I flipped back on the Blackhawks to see some very sloppy play at the end of the 2nd period, which resulted in 2 quick Vancouver goals. The Hawks would head to the 3rd period down 3-0. Meanwhile, the Bulls still held the lead.
At that point, I decided I was locking in on the Hawks. The game would finish before the Bulls, so I could still tune into the end of the Bulls game. The big reason I decided to lock in is because of the game situation. I like watching the Hawks when they are losing. They just seem to play better. Lots of times with that lead, they frustrate me. Down 3-0, on the road, against the Canucks… now this is what I like to see. It’s because we believe in the Hawks too. A 3 goal lead on the road heading into the final period may be a huge hill to overcome for most teams; we know our Hawks better than that. All they kept talking about was getting an early goal to put the pressure back on Vancouver. Let the 3rd period begin.
The Hawks did get that early tally, and it was a beauty. Just as the power play was ending, the Hawks made not 1, but 2 passes across ice about 10 feet in front of the net. Bread man flung it across to the birthday boy, who seconds later served it right back to him for the Hawks first goal. It was awesome. About a minute after that, the Hawks tallied again. It was one of the new guys. I’m still getting used to them. Hinostroza made an nice individual effort to get his 1st career goal. Later in the period, he made an assist to another newbie, Hartman, who didn’t miss. The Hawks had tied it up. I was pumped.

Going to OT, feeling confident, the Blackhawks didn’t disappoint. This time it was the Captain, with a 5 hole beauty to give the Hawks the big 2 points. I was happy with the decision I had made at the start of the 3rd. Now, it’s back to the Bulls.
As I flipped them back on, the Clippers had the ball, and proceeded to take their first lead since 4-2. The Bulls had held them off almost the entire game, but now the Clippers were back. Now, I was locked in to the final 6 minutes. Lots of outside shots when buckets are needed is not a good thing in my opinion. Wade firing, Butler firing, one of the new Bulls guys, Canaan fired too; he made his late in the 4th to give the Bulls a shot. Still, you have to take it to the hole, and good things will happen. I saw a couple interesting things in the 4th.
I saw the Bulls huddle during a 20 second timeout without Hoiberg. With the addition of Wade, and to some degree Rondo, it looks like Fred’s services will no longer be needed. He steps into the Spolestra and Lue mold of coach, which is not a bad thing. It’s good when the players take things into their own hands. Great coaches can make a difference, and I’m not saying Fred is great, but at the end of the day, in either case, it’s up to the players. Hoiberg also got tossed at the very end of this game, which was a shocker too. The Bulls came up short on this night, but they definitely made it interesting. They were so close to starting this circus trip 3-0; 2-1 is not too bad though.
Saturday night was a perfect example of why we watch. Two Chicago teams in action… two great games were the result. With the Blackhawks, we know what to expect. With the Bulls, we’re learning. I was just so happy to see both teams play so well tonight. Yes, the end result was a split, but tonight gave me hope that both teams’ seasons will be promising. I’m glad… the Cubs made us forget about the Bears for the first half of the season, now we need the UC boys to do the same with the second half. Way past my bed time… good night Chicago.

Turned off the Bhawks too early after that Toews game winner because the nucks challenged and caught the Hawks offside…goal overturned. OT continued but the Bhawks still had the last laugh as BIG HOSS got the gwg! Bhawks win a thriller 4-3 in ot and stay hot while improving their road record. Going to be another great year watching the Bhawks!
The Bulls blew a 19pt first half lead and lost late. 2-1 road trip so far is not bad. Still not sure what to expect from the Bulls, but my guess remains to be a few games above .500.
In both cases, the Bhawks and Bulls are better off than the Bears…playoffs should be a lock for the Bhawks and Bulls.
