November 10, 2016: The Wade Effect

posted in: Bulls | 1

Been watching a bit more of the Bulls lately, as I slowly get back into Chicago sports post Cubs World Championship.  I have to admit… it’s been a slow transition.  I’m going to ride this Cubs wave as long as I can, but… there are other things going on in Chicago, and we’re going to stick to sports here.

The Bulls lost to the Hawks and then beat the Heat on Thursday night.  I don’t know if it’s Cubs hangover, or if it’s really this Bulls team that I’m taking a long time to get used to.  I think it’s the latter.  The biggest of these new Bulls is Dwyane Wade.

I liked Dwyane.. still don’t get why his parents switched the A and the Y.  He’s a Chicago boy, and I support mostly everybody coming from the same place that I came from, although he did grow up just outside of Chicago.  Still, the way he played at Marquette made us proud.  He was phenomenal in that one NCAA tourney.  He then carried it over to the NBA, capturing the Heat’s first franchise title with Shaq.  Yes, he had Shaq, and Shaq had him, but honestly, I was OK with them winning that year.  I liked Wade until that one summer…

That one summer where he played with our emotions… don’t care what he says.  The backcourt would have been Rose and Wade; the healthy version of Rose and the younger version of Wade.  It could have meant a title for Chicago.  But… he decided to stay put and call his super friends to Miami; they ended up winning 2 titles on their way to being one of the teams I hated the most in professional sports.  It was after he spurned us, and joined forces with LeBum, that I began to hate him.

Still, I always hated LBJ more, but they were teammates, and it rubbed off on him.  After all, they both went to the same school of flopping.  But moving on, HE was the reason Miami won… not LBJ.  LBJ always needs somebody else to do it when it counts.  He couldn’t look to pass to anybody in Cleveland first time around, so he flocked to Miami so that when the game was on the line, he could pass the ball to one of the game’s best closers Wade.  On his next move, he ensured there was somebody with that gene around; his name is Kyrie Irving.  But this isn’t about Lebron, it’s about Dwyane… and now, after all this, he’s playing with the Bulls.

So as my dislike for him fades, I have to try to like him; not that easy, especially this on-court version.  It’s hard NOT to like him off the court, with all the stuff he does in the community, and that is especially needed here in Chicago.  Yes, he does have some interesting fashion choices (what do I know about that), although that seems to have come back a bit.  Wearing some of that stuff in Chicago will get you slapped.  Nice choice with that Bears jacket Wade…  But it’s on the court where we see an old Wade.  He will still have great games.  He can still hit the big shot.  I just don’t see him being consistent any more.  He gambles on defense.  It’s great when he does steal it, about 2x per game, but when he doesn’t… it puts the defense at a big advantage.  His shot selection is questionable at best.  He is not a 3 point shooter.  He seems to take more of those last second shots with plenty of time on the shot clock than anyone.  He does bring experience and some leadership; that is needed on this Bulls team.  Still… it’s still sinking in for me, and I haven’t even began to talk about Rondo.

What will the Wade effect be on this team?  If we can say one thing, it will be interesting, and after all, that’s all that GarPax really wanted here.  Forget about our chances at winning, this year or long term.  They needed to put a team on the court with some big names to try to get some folks in the stands.  By the looks of it, they haven’t fooled everybody.  Still, I will support my Bulls all day every day, regardless of who is playing on the court, and who is trying to manage things in the front office.  I just need a little more time to really embrace this year’s team… I’ll get there.  In the meantime & always, Go Bulls!!!

Liked dwade with and coming out of marquette. Was fine with him winning with miami, even with shaq. Then he screwed that up. Turning Chicago, his hometown, was one thing, but to team up with the queen and rupaul was another. Now, we have to put up with him since he is with the Bulls. I think the Bulls will be around or right above .500 all year, which should be good enough for the playoffs in the east. Dwade will not play every game. He will shoot too many 3s. He is over the hill but good enough to hit some clutch shots and help the Bulls make the playoffs. Is that good enough? I guess it has to be because the Bulls will not be winning a title this year. GO BULLS!!!
