November 7, 2016: Pour It Up

posted in: Cubs | 1

OK, I think I will give the Cubs a break… after this one.  Today, we’ll “pour it up” for those not here to see it happen.

We all know people who lived and died and never saw it.  Family, friends… we all know the famous folks related to the Cubs not around.  I’m sure Ernie & Ron were at the table helping negotiate that rain delay.  And Harry’s prophecy finally came true… all these years later.  This whole Cubs World Series thing skipped an entire generation, and then some.  Thankfully, it will skip no more.

I love the stories that Ricketts and Theo told during the rally.  About the older fans, with one of their last wishes being, to see the Cubs win the World Series.  That is so true.  It’s been on my bucket list too.  Lots of folks have me by decades, but it’s been a pretty long wait.  I always said, when the Cubs win the World Series, God can take me then.  Now there are plenty of folks that I would love to see again, but on second thought, I’m not ready yet.  There is still too much to do here on this earth.

One of the people I’d like to see again is one of my good friends; the closest friend that I’ve lost thus far in this life.  He passed last year, and yes, he was a big Cubs fan.  So when they won, he was one of the first people I thought of.  And when I made my way back to Wrigley on Saturday night, his name was one that I wrote on Wrigley Field in chalk.  When I sent that to his wife, she sent me back a picture of their kids at his grave site with Cubs stuff.  This Cubs stuff is serious people.  I wish I could have celebrated with him, but I know, that he is celebrating too.

The first person I thought of was my grandmother; her name is on the bricks at Wrigley too.  My mom’s mom, lived upstairs from us growing up.  It was there, that I watched the most Cubs games.  We would run up there whenever we wanted; we never had to knock, or let her know we were coming.  We just went.  We played all kinds of stuff up there, including some pretty serious nerf basketball games.  But if there was one thing we could count on, during our summer vacation from school, was that at 1pm, my grandmother would be sitting in her recliner, with the TV tuned into the Lead Off Man.  We made our way up there lots of times during this time frame.

And if it wasn’t on the TV, my grandmother would be laying in the bed, listening to the Cubs on the radio.  If the Cubs weren’t playing, it was polka, but if the Cubs were on, you know what would be playing on the radio.  One of my grandmother’s favorite Cubs was Mike Bielecki.  She liked the way his butt looked in those baseball pants… haha.  She loved the Cubs, just as my mother does now.  This is part of why this Cubs stuff is so big.

It links generations.  It reminds us of a more innocent time.  It’s linked to the love for baseball that was instilled in me at a very early age.  With my Mom playing catch with me in the back yard, to my Dad coaching me from pee-wee through pony leagues for the good portion of 8 summers in Harrison Park.  I played on teams with my brother… and watched my sister play on those same fields.  The Cubs are part of our lives; they are intertwined with family, growing up, and baseball.  This is why I love them so much.

And now, I smile… because my son, and all his cousins, will not have to go through those dues paying years.  He will not have to wait 40 years or more to see the Cubs win a World Series.  He will not know this struggle or feel that pain.  There will be other struggles and I’m sure there will be pain over the years, but he will only know the Cubs as winners; not the losers that we grew to love.  It’s a brand new day for Cubs fans, and I am so happy I am alive to see it.

So don’t waste your liquor by pouring it on the ground, pour it up!  Celebrate for all those who didn’t see it but would be just as happy as those of us who did.  The Cubs are World Series Champions!  All is right in the world…

Loveable Winners! That is now this CUBS franchise thanks to winning it all this year. Gram was definitely celebrating in heaven that night. All the Cubs players that have come and gone. All the Cubs fans that didn’t get to see this reality. All the Cubs fans that waited so long for this. We all got our wish! Just to hear all of the stories and see all of the celebrations when the Cubs won, it brings tears to my eyes and joy to my heart. Thank you 2016 Chicago Cubs! And as my Gram always said, Nostrovia!
