October 4, 2016: Robin to Ricky

posted in: White Sox | 1

And the first managerial change of the 2016 off season has been made, and it’s right here in our hometown.  Ricky Renteria will take over managerial duties from Robin Ventura for the White Sox immediately.

Bravo for the change; I know this is coming from a Cubs fan, but I think most would agree.  I thought Ventura was a bad hire the second the Sox made it; check my historic blogs if you don’t believe.  I liked the fact that they wanted to bring back an ex player; I liked Ventura as a player.  That doesn’t mean he was a good coaching candidate.  The only experience he had was with a high school team.  OK, well, finally, that ship has sailed.  And now, the new coach has been named; that was quick.

Or was it?  Rick Hahn, who probably hired Renteria so quickly based on his first name, said this was in the works for a month.  Still, this sort of feels like a Hoiberg type deal.  Was there any other candidate searching?  Is Renteria truly the best candidate?  Hahn said he would have been the hottest managerial candidate in the MLB this offseason; of course he would say that.

Nothing against Ricky.  I liked him when he was with the Cubs.  The only reason he was kicked to the curb so quick is because Maddon became available; I’m not feeling any regret there.  I do feel bad for the guy, and I am happy that he is getting another shot.  I do believe it is well deserved, I’m just saying… did the Sox check who else was available?

What about the bench coach of the Cubs?  I’d have to think he would be a hotter candidate than Renteria on the open market.  I’m sure there are others.  Did the Sox really pick the best available?  Or did they pick the most convenient?

I hope he does well; he can’t be worse than Robin, let me put that on record.  He wants to bring a little more intensity; amen brother.  The culture shock from Ozzie to Robin was a big one; somewhere in between would be good.  Or… should the Sox have brought Ozzie back?  Was that even an option?  Or is this move just part of the rebuilding that will never be called rebuilding by the Sox?

They announced it immediately after the season was over; actually, it had leaked prior to then.  Thanks for getting in and getting out; there are other more important baseball matters at hand in the city right now.  Maybe Renteria can lead the Sox back to the postseason?

If I was a Sox fan, I would be OK with the move… not thrilled, but OK.  I’d be happy Robin is gone, but would wonder could we have done better.  Curious what the take will be across the air waves and twitter sphere.  By every account, Ricky seems like a good guy; I do hope he does well.

So from Ozzie to Robin to Ricky… the Sox manager job rests in the hands of an ex-Cub manager.  I wonder how Sox fans feel about that?  I know there is a certain population, that probably does not like that one bit.  It’s that same population that will be rooting hard for the winner of the Mets Giants game on Wednesday to beat the Cubs.  It’s that population of fans that can kiss my ass.

OK, so I’m a little tense… not quite over the top yet, but with the playoffs starting on Friday, I’m getting into my mindset.  Had to get this one out of the way before the Cubs exclusive blogs take over; maybe one more non-Cubs blog?  I have to do a Bears preview right?  We’ll see.. but it’s hard to think of anything else at this point, let alone who is managing the Sox.

Congratulations though…  Any Sox fans out there?  How are you feeling about this one?  Let me hear you now…

Robin had to go…it was time. I dont think he should have gotten hired in the first place, but the sox gave him a shot…he missed way left. Oh well, time for the sox to move on, take some time and search for an ideal candidate, do some interviews, and see who the best fit is. Oh wait, they already hired renteria. I liked him with the Cubs. He did a solid job but had to turn it over to maddon when he became available. Renteria probably deserved more but who can really question that now? He gets his shot with the sox, and I think he will do well. Time to take aim on the southside…hope renteria hits that bullseye.
    GO CUBS GO!!!
