September 27, 2016: Fixing the Bears

posted in: Bears | 2

How do we fix this?  How did it get this bad?  It’s been rough sledding as Bears fans lately.. when will it get better?

I honestly thought this would be the year we took a step in the right direction.  Heck, why couldn’t we make the playoffs in the 2nd year of the Pace Fox era.  I was willing to give Pace a shot after Emery flamed out.  I was excited about John Fox as our football coach.  Why is this combo not working?  Where did we go wrong?

Well, there’s an easy starting point.  Let’s start with the longest tenured Bear.  Now that the Bears have shed every old player we’ve had, there is only one remaining; this was the one that should have went first.  When the Bears first acquired Cutler, nobody was complaining about how much we gave up to get him.  After all, we were finally getting our franchise quarterback.  What did it matter what we gave up?  Would I want the Bears to do something like that again?  The answer is yes.

It was the right move at the time.  I’m not going to go back to that day and regret it.  We needed a QB.  We thought we had solved our biggest problem.  We just chose the wrong guy.  The original move wasn’t the horrible misstep, it was the resigning that began the screwing of this team.  At that point, we knew what Cutler was all about.  We knew that he would never be THAT guy, yet… we still signed him to a big deal for multiple years.  Rewind to THAT moment, franchise tag him for a year, and then cut ties; that would have led this team on a different trajectory.  Maybe we would have already had THE new guy.  Maybe we would have had a great young QB leading our offense, instead of this old dud.  I don’t think the Bears are going anywhere until we find the next guy.  Hopefully, we choose wiser this time.

We may get our chance.  That may be the one silver lining that comes out of what looks to be a horrible season.  To get a top pick, and draft a QB high in the first round… that may be the turning point of this franchise that hasn’t won anything since the great 85 Bears.  Well, you can’t discount what the Bears did under Lovie.  Those were some great teams.  Looking back now, it’s one of those “don’t know what we had until it was gone” type deals.  The Lovie Bears were the closest thing we had to greatness since the greatest.

Since then, it’s been a series of bad moves.  Another thing I haven’t liked is the way we’ve cut ties with the older guys.  One by one, the all-time Bears were cut loose.  It wasn’t a smooth transition.  I know there is no place for loyalty in this game any more, but to keep some of these guys, to help transition the young guys, or better yet… to keep some of these guys who still had a lot of production left in them, would have been smarter.  More bad personnel decisions were made.

That’s really the key here.  Deciding who to go after, who to keep, who to cut, who to draft; it’s those decisions that will help in our quest of fixing the Bears.  I think there are some pieces here.  I don’t think we’re THAT far… I may be in the minority with that thinking.  The first move to fixing the Bears is to address the QB position yet again.  Trading for a good young QB or drafting one will be a big step in getting us headed back in the right direction.

Much more to come on this topic… many, many more thoughts.  But for now, we return to a franchise who has made some better decisions lately; a franchise on the brink of greatness.  It’s a much happier topic at this time.  But we won’t forget about our Bears… I’m just waiting for that last piece to leave, and our new guy to arrive.  I can’t wait…

Bears had a great game plan going into the seasons. I could not believe the players they picked up on defense. Still, they didn’t address the OL via the draft or the secondary via free agency. It may look like they did, but did a bad job at it. Injuries are piling up and you cant fight that. They didn’t address that gaping hole that Forte left. No offensive playmaker or a slot WR. Jefferies is playing for himself and White is still green.

Other than John Fox being there, what was done and how much control does he have one roster moves. There is a world of difference between J.Fox of Denver and J.Fox of Chicago. Everything points to the bad contracts that the front office handed out, like Cutlers.

Resigning cutler was a horrible move, but it is done. It does not mean that the Bears should not cut ties. I think pace and fox now know the cutler will never be the guy to get the job done. So why play or keep him any longer? Say good bye and start fresh. The Bears need a young qb, whether through draft or trade, to take the reigns. Make it happen pace!
The D was going to be and may still be improved, but with half of the starters out with injuries, it is really hard to tell. Keep building the speed and pass rushing!
The Oline seemed to play a lot better this past week. Again, they are a mash unit that has only been together for a few weeks. I think they keep improving each week.
It is hard to stay positive during this rough stretch, but what else can we do? Keep finding some positives. Keep building. Play with heart. Good things will happen, this year or next.
    BEAR DOWN!
