September 5, 2016: Giants

posted in: Bears, Cubs | 1

The Cubs just won 3 of 4 this weekend over the team they call Giants. It’s a name that’s shared with an NFL team. They both used to reside in New York.

Of course I have no memories of the baseball New York Giants, although didn’t Willie Mays make his catch with that team. The Giants that I know in baseball are from San Francisco. I have a lot of memories of them.

1989 NLCS jumps to mind. Candlestick Park.  The World Series with the A’s.  The earthquake. The left cross and the right hook. Brett Butler for some reason comes to mind. I made the trip to San Fran and saw a preseason game at their new stadium; very impressive. Lately, it’s been the team that wins the World Series on the even years; three consecutive even years to be exact adds up to a very, very successful run from the franchise. Sorry to report, that it will not be 4 in a row.

The Giants, or Gmen of the NFL bring many memories too. 1985 NFC divisional playoff game. Sean Landeta. Lawrence Taylor. Leonard Marshall crushing Montana. Phil Simms record Super Bowl performance. More recently, the Devin Hester missed FG return. The David Tyree catch to help beat the undefeated Pats.  Both teams represent that name well.

It’s been since those mid 80s, specifically 1985, that the Bears were Giants of the NFL. But we only have to look at this year, to see the Cubs play that role as Giants of the MLB.  They’ve had 2 pretty memorable series against the San Fran version the last 2 years.  Last year spring boarded the Cubs the rest of the year; this year was just the continuance of the Cubs dominance this year. Where do we go from here?

We didn’t see them in the playoffs last year.  Maybe we meet them this year…or maybe not. They’ve been struggling big time. The Dodgers are the division leaders. The Cards and Mets are in the wild card position. Somebody may end up missing the playoffs.

Meanwhile, the Cubs march towards October.  They could have swept them had it not been for a badly played game against their ace; still almost got them. But we did get them. Another series win in the season full of them. Still waiting for the 3 series wins we’ve been waiting for forever. Giants or not, we’ll be taking on all comers. Maybe we will have to meet them again, or maybe this was the last time we’ve seen them this year.  Go Cubs!

Not a fan of the baseball or football giants. Could care less if the either one ever makes the playoffs again. If the baseball giants make it this year, I hope the Cubs crush them! This is the year, and nothing or nobody is going to stop this team. Destiny is in the Cubs hands. Dont let it slip through this year. Grab and strangle it…no choking. Cubs power…keep that blue train rolling! GO CUBS GO!!!
