Who doesn’t like a 3 day weekend? Well, how about those people who have to work it? Yeah, it probably isn’t so great to them. It is great to those of us who are not working; the 3 day weekend is always welcome. This one is because of Labor Day.
Another national holiday to celebrate. How do you celebrate? Most likely some family time, some BBQs, some time to relax… I’m sure you don’t celebrate by not standing up for the national anthem.
That has been the talk this entire week; Colin Kaepernick not standing up for the anthem. I find it funny from this angle. The first time I heard about it was on some World News Report. I just happened to be flipping through the channels, and this story popped up. I hadn’t heard about it until now. As the story ended, and they flipped it back to the anchor sitting at the desk, she said something like this: “This is a really big story considering what a superstar Colin Kaepernick is”. Now you see why I thought it was funny?
This guy is not even starting in the league; he is a backup QB… some superstar. I do remember his debut, as do must of us I’m sure. It was against our Bears on Monday Night Football in San Francisco. He came onto the scene and dominated that game. He ended up being a pretty special player for a while. He does have a small place in my heart for that playoff game against the Packers, where he ran up and down the field on them, as they sent the Packers home for the year. He led the Niners to the Super Bowl; they came up short. Since then, it’s been nothing but downhill.
And now this… I haven’t really been falling all the details and opinions on this story, but it’s kind of hard not to. The media has grabbed onto this one pretty good. Any type of negative action taken against our country seems to bring out a lot of publicity; the same goes for all the violence going on in our country and across the world. The violence that is focused on the most is that between white cops and black youth.

So this is what Colin is protesting by sitting down during the national anthem. This is the great thing about our country… freedom. It is our constitutional right, and he is exercising it. We all can exercise ours by either agreeing or disagreeing with his stance. Personally, I disagree.
Again, it was hard not to avoid reading or seeing things about this story. I agree what I read about the flag standing for the greatness of our country. The flag stands for everything that is right; the perfect America. So, we support it… we fight for it… we wish it could be like that. It’s not. No country is perfect; we are no different. Is there a lot of BS going on, that BS that Colin is protesting? Sure. There’s a lot of other BS going on too… too much to talk about right here. But, there’s also a lot of good going on; it’s unfortunate that the good stuff going on doesn’t get the same amount of attention as the bad stuff. The media knows what to latch on to; they know what will stir things up… get people fired up one way or another. The good things happening in this country don’t fall in that category.
But, that’s what I choose to focus on; the good things in America. We are free to express our beliefs; that’s a pretty good thing. We can all try to make something of ourselves; Colin certainly did that by being in the NFL. We have options of things to do, things to get in to, things to get passionate about. There are lots of good things.
Yet, it’s the bad things that get all the attention. I don’t agree with the way Colin chose to express his passion towards one of these bad things; it’s good that he’s passionate. And who am I to say how someone should express their passion; I do know that if more people were passionate about certain things, and were able to work together to make things better, things could get better. At the end of the day, I can only worry about myself, and how I express my passion. I do that in this blog every day; there are many other ways I express my passions… many other ways that I could express it. I wonder if I do enough. We should all ask ourselves that question, instead of judging others’ expression of passion. Although the act of sitting down doesn’t technically show any passion, he’s trying to bring attention to one of the bad things in our country. And yes, he’s not really a superstar any more, but he has succeeded. Was it to bring attention to himself, or to the subject at hand? Is he doing something else about it, besides just sitting down? Are we? Again, it starts in the mirror. We start there, follow our passions, do something… that’s a good place to start during this 3 day weekend. Enjoy it!

if this jerk doesn’t agree with what’s going on in this country,,,,,,,,,LEAVE!!!!!
let’s just call him COLON from now on, that’s closer!
MK
Colon has the right to do whatever he wants. Thank you America for making that happen for him and all of us! You want to sit or kneel during the anthem, go for it…dbag, but dont make it seem like anything you are doing or saying is making one bit of difference. Now, there are others following this clown’s lead…oh boy! I think most Americans know of the things that bring us down…racism, murders, thefts, etc. All of this has been going on forever, colon. It has and never will be ok, but your way of making a difference is doing nothing but giving you some much needed publicity because you suck now. You and all your followers sitting and kneeling during the anthem need to figure out a better way, like actually doing something about the things you supposedly feel so strongly about. If you had any class, you would understand how strongly some people feel about the flag and anthem. You would know how disrespectful a lot of Americans view your actions. Regardless of your reasoning, right or wrong, express it in other ways, like helping financially or doing some work to bring about change. Better yet, hold a protest. Anything but what you are doing. 1 last thing colon…stand your ass up and salute the American flag for the greatest country on Earth!
USA, USA, USA!!!
