September 2, 2016: False Alarm

posted in: Cubs | 2

No hitter in progress. That’s the message I got about 3pm on Friday. I said really?  Jon Lester had just worked 6 no hit innings. It was time to pay attention.

Not that I’m ever not paying attention, but a no hitter… It’s time to make a move. Forget work for a second.  It had been a bloodbath anyways. I needed a break. Where would I go to watch the rest of the game?  Should I leave now?  Maybe after the 7th…

I sent a message to my brother and called my wife. I told her, please tell me you were sleeping.  I had to get this kind of news from my west coast friend?  Why were you not on it?  This is an embarrassment.  She forgot it was on. Now she was on it. I told her text me after he gets through the 7th.  I wasn’t thinking any kind of a jinx. I usually do in these spots.

There were those couple close Jake ones where I sent a text out, then the no hitter was broken up.  I didn’t see the LA one since I was at a concert. I did see the Reds game…I was texting then; no issue. Now Lester was in this spot.  I don’t recall him being this close before with the Cubs.  Then I read this was the 13th time in his career he has gone at least 5 no hit innings. That was good for most among active pitchers. Wow.

It turned out to be a false alarm. I got the text over, followed by home run. I didn’t even end up leaving my office.  The Cubs did prevail though. That’s been happening a lot lately.  So has Lester winning.

Don’t look now, he’s 15-4 after Friday’s win.  Don’t look now, after the Cardinals loss later that night, the magic number is 13. Don’t look now, but the Cubs are 40 games over 500, 16.5 games up on the Cardinals.  What a summer it has been.

It still feels like summer. With the weather not ready to turn bad just yet, and the Cubs playing league leading baseball, I wish this could go on forever. But like the summer, we know it can’t and it won’t. Seasons will change.  The fall is around the corner. Will the Cubs play as well in the third season of the year?

If they do, we will be World Series champs. If not, it will be another painful season end. I’m ready and not ready at the same time. I don’t want this to end, but I do want to find out if this fall will bring something that none of us has ever seen.

We joked at work, about how crazy it’s been, and how at the end of the day, it’s all about the Cubs right now. Nothing else really matters. We are riding this train until the end of the line.  Let’s go Cubs!

Lester at 15-4 is damn impressive! With jake, lester, and lackey all with playoff experience, they will lead the way in the playoffs. It will not hurt to have the mlb era leader Hendricks ready to go in the 4 slot if needed. As the season winds down, it is time to finish strong, healthy, and rested. Maddon will make sure all of those things happen so that the Cubs will be firing on all cylinders once the playoffs start. I cannot wait. I am ready for history to be made. I am sure the Cubs are, too! GO CUBS GO!!!
