August 30, 2016: Winning Never Gets Old

posted in: Cubs | 1

Who was saying he wanted to see the Cubs lose some games?  Yeah, yeah, I know.  It was me, and from here until the end of the season, if and when the Cubs lose some games, it will not be the end of the world.  That being said, it’s always better to win.  Winning never gets old.

I really wanted the Cubs to win Tuesday night considering my mom was in the house.  I remember one game we went to where the Cubs didn’t pull it out when we took my mom to a game.  That wasn’t pretty.  It was way back when Ryan Dempster was in the bullpen.  The Cubs had the lead against the Reds, but the bullpen, led by Dumpster, how I referred to him at the time, blew the lead and the game.  I let them know my displeasure, and I was about to be escorted out of Wrigley, but I beat them to it.  Not sure if I ever shared that story before, but there you go.  I wasn’t with my parents on Tuesday night, and more importantly, the Cubs won.

Bryant almost went deep in the first, right before Rizzo did.  It would have been back to back, but one home run an inning is still pretty good.  The Cubs jumped to a 2-0 lead; they tacked on a run in the 2nd, and that was it.  That was enough for the potential NL Cy Young this year.  Can you even believe that?  Kyle Hendricks winning the Cy Young award?  Well, if he can tack on a few more wins this last month or so of the season, he may be in that conversation.  Crazy.

That has to be the most surprising part of the season.  I liked Kyle, and thought he’d be good for maybe 10 wins.  He’s been awesome.  His ERA is unbelievable, especially at home, especially lately.  I think it’s his last 5 home starts where his ERA is sub 1.  Yeah, crazy.

You need stories like this to make a team great.  It’s not only the guys you expect to do it, but some unexpected surprises that help propel a team through 162 and beyond.

So screw the theory of losing a couple games.  Keep those wins coming.  We can’t have any fear at this point.  This team is relentless.  I heard that word used to describe the Cubs on a pregame show earlier this week.  It’s true.  They give it their all every game.  They don’t give away any at bats.  They are never out of a game.  They are always pushing… always battling, whether on the mound or in the box.  It has been the successful formula which adds up to a magic number of 18… and we’re not even in September yet!!!

Yeah, it is still scary to think about the postseason, especially when they are THIS good.  But… we must embrace it.  We must hold on tight.  We must enjoy every minute.  We may be watching the best Cubs team ever.  Is that a stretch?  Check back with me in 2 months.  Go Cubs!

I remember that family outing to Wrigley, too. Think it was wood and dempster in the pen trying to point you out to security…hahaha!
Back to now, hendricks has been amazing this year, especially at Wrigley. He definitely deserves a playoff start. What is he wins the CY young, or leads the league in era? This guy has been that good. He is the junior professor, and if he can continue pitching anywhere near where professor maddux did for his career, the Cubs are going to be in good shape for many years!
    GO CUBS GO!!!
