Did I really think I would make it to see the end of the Cubs game on Friday night? It was the end of a long week; Friday the end of a long day. Nowadays, 1am is well past my bedtime. It wasn’t like I didn’t try.
It was Cubs Dodgers in Dodger Stadium! I like Dodger Stadium; it’s one of my favorite ballparks. When I was living in LA, I went to many Cubs games there. If I was still living in LA, I would have been at this one. It was first place team against first place team. The high powered Cubs going against the hot Dodgers, who had taken over first place from the Giants, and almost got done sweeping them, if it wasn’t for a gem by Matt Moore. I was pumped up for this game.
The timeline on the home front worked out great. My son just started to lightly snore at about 9:10pm; I watched Fowler, Bryant, and Rizzo’s AB on ESPN gamecast before I headed to the couch. Poured myself a nice big glass of 7up; followed that up with a granola bar. I was ready to watch the whole game. The last thing I remember was a 3-1 deficit.
When I woke up, the game was still on; the score, 6-4 Cubs in the top of the 10th. Rizzo was at the plate. I knew something had to just happen, so I grabbed the remote and rewound it. I had a feeling it would only be for one batter. Kris Bryant had left the yard to deep right center field to give the Cubs the 2 run advantage in extras. Hell yeah!

Of course I stood up for the rest of the inning, as I settled in hoping to see Chapman shut the door. He did. As Utley came to the plate with 1 on and 2 outs, I thought back to another memorable Utley AB that ended a game in LA with the Cubs. It was of course the Jake no hitter last year. Aroldis blew it by him, just like he did Reddick before. I know the guy is not invincible, but he’s pretty damn close. He brings that fire consistently. I believe I read 100.7 is his average fast ball speed… for the year! Cubs win, and the W flags were flying in LA.
So now, I had to check my phone to see how they came back from the 3-1 deficit; of course, it was KBoom again in the 8th who cut it to a one run lead. The kid is phenomenal; I’m not telling you anything you shouldn’t already realize. 7 HRs in 8 games now, per Jesse Rogers in that postgame interview. He is good… really really good. Then I saw Heyward was the one who scored on a wild pitch in the top of the 9th that sent this game to extras. He had reached with a lead off double, but I couldn’t see how he advanced from 2nd to 3rd. I didn’t have to wait long, as I flipped on MLB network, and the Cubs highlights were coming on.
I saw the first Bryant bomb… and I do mean bomb! Then the Soler AB in the 9th, where he struck out, and THAT’s how Heyward advanced to 3rd. Then I saw the wild pitch, or pass ball that went right through Ruiz’ catcher’s mitt to score the tying run. It was newly acquired Ruiz, which meant AJ Ellis was shipped out to the dismay of many of the Dodgers, including Clayton Kershaw. He supposedly cried after he found out. He’s supposed to be back soon. Without a healthy Kershaw, I don’t fear the Dodgers one bit. It was funny that Ruiz, who had a mix of boos and cheers in his first AB earlier that night (I was awake for that), was right in the middle of this outcome.
And what an outcome it was. There will be many Cubs fans sleepless in LA tonight. Go ahead… hit the town. The Dresden was always a solid spot for a drink. Make your way to Canter’s after that for a nice corned beef sandwich, or better yet, a chili cheeseburger from Tommy’s. Enjoy another Cubs victory; I will be sleeping again shortly with a smile on my face. The Cubs win… again. I ask the question again… when do the playoffs begin? Go Cubs Go!!!

KBOOM hits 2 bombs, including the game winner in the 10th. MVP, MVP, MVP! Always feels good to beat the dodgers. The win also guarantees the Cubs a winning road trip, which is always a good thing. Will the Cubs be able to take another one in lala, or will they end the road trip on a 2 game losing streak? More to come.
GO CUBS GO!!!
