How do you look at 40? It’s a milestone no doubt; my life could be halfway over. I hope I will live to 80… even longer than that, as long as my health cooperates. I would like to live to 100, 110, even 120 if I still had my wits. However, let’s use 80 as a ballpark; I’m halfway home.
I could be more than halfway home… I could be 99% home. Life is so precious, it could end in a second. The healthiest, safest, strongest people cannot predict when there time is. I guess at the bare minimum, I’d request 80 years; that means August 22, 2016 is halftime.
For your halftime entertainment, let’s talk about famous 40s. The first one that comes to mind is Gale Sayers. I honestly can’t think of more than that without looking it up. The next famous 40 I can think of is a 40 oz beer, you know, the ones you used to drink in the brown bag. Yes, I had my 40 phase. My first 40 ever was a beer called Crazy Horse; I wonder if I could still find it in the hood. It was a hot summer day, and I was guzzling it. One of the guys I was with asked me if I knew why they called it Crazy Horse. I didn’t. He explained the reason it’s called Crazy Horse is because it comes up on you like crazy; it did. I was praising the porcelain god that night. After that, one of my favorite 40s was Mickey’s. We drank it pretty regularly. I remember walking down the strip in Vegas drinking out of one. I received one as part of my turning 40 birthday alcohol package; just what I need…haha.
I saw something this year that I don’t remember seeing any other year. The Cubs retired Ernie Banks’ number 14 on this day in 1982. I thought that was so cool. I don’t remember that day, the same day I turned six years old. I will remember it forever now. I can’t believe I hadn’t seen that before.

It was a pretty laid back day; the day after my party, the week after my work party. I had a taste for fried chicken after watching Chicago’s best on Sunday night. The places they showed were both about an hour and forty five minutes away. My parents mentioned the honey butter fried chicken place which is down the street from our house; it was closed on Monday. But then I saw Parsons on my google search. Even closer than Honey Butter, every time we pass by this place it’s packed. We had been meaning to try it, and this turned out to be that day. It was delicious. Ricobene’s on Friday, Pequod’s on Sunday, my Mom’s cheesecake, my wife’s brownies, and a buttermilk donut from Stan’s Donuts, now Parsons on Monday… I weighed myself Sunday morning, because I have to wait a week to get back on the scale now. Yet, it’s 100% worth it; my stomach is very happy.
We had a couple beers as we watched the Cubs beat the Padres in their series opener, which brought their road trip to 2-2. Tuesday night they will go for their 80th victory of the season; their magic number is 27. That was a nice way for my birthday weekend to end. Not being at work was also critical to making this birthday happy; I still have another day off.
OK, I’ll stop my ramblings now. Maybe I’ll be doing more of this now that I’m getting older and all. 40 years ago today I was born to my parents on their 6th wedding anniversary; I share my birthday with them every year, or they share their anniversary with me, depending on how you look at it. This milestone birthday overshadowed their 46th wedding anniversary, but I’m done for a while now. I’ll still celebrate, as will they, but now it’s the countdown to 50; they get there first. And now, back to the second half…

Happy 40th…hope that forty hit the spot!
One other 40 I can think of is the rainman, shawn kemp! He was a thunderous dunker!
How about the billboard top 40?
Cubs take game 1 in sd…that place is full of nothing but blue…time to make it a winning road trip…the pads suck!
