August 14, 2016: Pesky Birds

posted in: Cubs | 1

Well, we tried to bury them.  After beating them on Thursday and Friday night, our division lead grew to 14 games.  With a foot on their throat, we failed to completely crush it.  The Cardinals beat the Cubs on Saturday and Sunday to pull out a series split, and leave Chicago down the original 12 games.

12 games… still a pretty damn good lead.  I’m not shedding any tears here, or quaking in my boots.  We knew they were some pesky birds.  They play hard.  They’re always in the mix.  They play through injuries, and always have somebody that will step up.  I hate to compliment them, but it’s the truth.  The success they have is what we’re shooting for.  They won’t die easily.

Still think the division is in the bank.  Will we go through another slump?  Yes.  Will the Cardinals get hot?  Sure.  Will it matter?  No, not as far as the division goes in the regular season.  The Cardinals only path in is through the wild card.  If they get in, and if they win their wild card game, then we may see them again when it counts.. at our place, down their best pitcher for Game 1.  I’m still not quaking.

But, as a Cubs fan, we worry… about everything, legit or not.  We worry about things like injuries, like finishing with the best record and flaming out in October, like this Cardinals team who is levels below us talent wise taking us out when it counts… But not now… there will be plenty of time for all of that.  I’m still breathing well… just wishing I could fast forward to October.

Lackey’s arm discomfort is something a little more concerning.  Although, placing him on the DL for 15 days could serve as a good rest for him leading up to the postseason.  Do it.  Then do it for another starter if necessary.  I would, even if the injury, hopefully, isn’t serious.  Should have put Rondon on the 15 day DL if necessary.  Buying these guys’ rest whenever however possible is invaluable especially with a double digit division lead.

Still, I hate losing to the Cardinals.  I was so happy after the first 2 games, and now, just a bit aggravated.  Wish we could have swept them, but if this means we’ve given them life, to make the playoffs again, to meet us again, for us to knock them out again, it will all be worth it.  I want to be the team like last year to put that nail in their coffin; wish that could happen that way every year.  It still can this year.

So enjoy your 2 wins… whoop it up.  We’ll see you again.  We’re not afraid of you any more.  You guys are like some annoying fly that you can’t quite hit with that rolled up newspaper or maybe your slippers.  We’ll be ready to smash you when it counts, if you’re lucky enough to be there to take it.  See you when we see you….

The worry, doubt, second guessing, and plain old nervousness is the life of a true Cubs fan. We always gave that engrained in the back of our heads. So until the last out is made, the division is clinched, and the final out of the season is made, we will always be nervous, waiting for something bad to happen. That is exactly why Maddon is doing such a phenomenal job with these young guys and this team. He is pushing all the right buttons and saying all the right things. Let’s hope it continues all year. Who cares about the red turds! They and eveyone else are in the rear view mirror. The Cubs can only lose if they beat themselves in a series. This team can do it. I feel it. I want it. Finish strong boys, the major work is still to be done!
    GO CUBS GO!!!
