August 12, 2016: Burying the Birds

posted in: Cubs | 1

The Cardinals rolled into town on Thursday night for the beginning of a 4 game series.  Down 12 games already to the Cubs, they would need to take 3 of 4 or sweep to make a dent into the lead.  After the first 2 games of the series, those would both be out of the question.

The Cubs would take the first 2 games running their winning streak to 11 games; extending the division lead to 14 games.  It’s August 12th.

Is it time to bury these birds?  Dexter Fowler talked about trying to clinch the division by September 1st.  The Cubs magic number is 34.  It’s August 12th.

Recently, I purchased tickets to a Cubs game in September, hoping to guess the clincher.  They end the season on the road, and their last home series is against the Cardinals.  I picked the last game of the 2nd to last home series vs the Reds.  There would be only 10 games after that one.  I’m hoping I guessed right; I wouldn’t be mad if Fowler was closer to being right.  After the first 2 games of this series, it’s certainly trending that direction.

Again, it’s only August 12th… still a lot of baseball to be played.  You have to expect another slump from our Cubbies; I’m hoping it’s in September NOT October, where there is no room for slumps.  They will not continue to run up big winning streaks, at least I don’t believe so.  Just as they came out of the gates strong in April, they did the same after the break; they continue to.  It was nice timing for the Birds to make another visit to the Confines.

On Thursday night, it was an extra inning affair that finished with a walk-off walk.  Yeah, OK, it was a strike to Rizzo, but we’ll take it.  Not the first or the last call that will be missed; I’m sure there were plenty of Cardinal fans whining about it.  Friday was a different story.

The texts starting coming in at work… 7-0 Cubs.  Soler HR.  Szczur HR… Szczur another home run.  5 home runs total for the Cubs on this day, and a blow out that couldn’t come against a better opponent.  Love pasting these guys.  Love putting them in a bigger hole in the division.  Love trying to make them irrelevant from here on out; I’m sure we haven’t heard the last of them though.

On Twitter, saw a cool depiction of the game.  It was Oprah, and the verbage read… “Cardinal pitchers were like, home run for you, home run for you  “.  Another one showed a dead Cardinal which summed up what happened at Wrigley Field on Friday afternoon.  Loved each one of them.

Burying the birds is fun, but until they are officially dead, in the division, out of the playoffs, we’ll keep one eye on them.  Yes, we knocked them out last year in the postseason, which was super sweet; we may meet again.  No guarantees come October; anything can happen.  Keep grinding, keep winning, keep that focus on the prize.  Go Cubs Go.

Love pounding the red turds! Bury them early and often Cubbies! After a ball 4 walk off W, the Cubs came out and destroyed the turds with the long ball. How good has szczur been? Szczur, szczur, szczur! Soler has been hot since rejoining the Cubs, too. 11 game winning streak for the Cubbies. It wont last forever, but it continues to push the Cubs nl central and mlb best record leads. Crazy to think of a magic number mid-august, but that is how good the Cubs have been and are. Keep rolling Cubbies…right into the playoffs!
    GO CUBS GO!!!
