The Cubs won their 9th straight on Wednesday night. This one a bit closer than the night before. The Cubs are winning every type of game right now. Whether it be a comeback or a blowout, and now, even those close games. As the Cubs continue to cruise, what is the only thing we have to fear?
I talked about this a bit last week, and the answer is ourselves. The biggest concern is injuries. We got hit early with a big one, and a handful since then. On Wednesday night, the bug struck again. This time it was Pedro Strop that went down.
After test results, he has a torn meniscus; sound familiar? Yep, one of the DRose injuries hit Pedro, and he will be out 4-6 weeks. Concerned?
I’m not too concerned. Out of the big 3 in the pen, he was the guy that worried me the most. Chapman… lock down. Rondon… ditto; although he has been resting with triceps soreness. I’m actually more concerned about that then the Strop injury. We have options before the 8th and the 9th inning; it doesn’t have to be just Strop in the 7th. We’ve discussed this before too.

With the way the Cubs starters have pitched as of late, not even sure we need to cover the 7th. But let’s just go with the assumption that we do. Who will step up? How about one of our mid-season acquisitions, Montgomery or Smith? Joe can bring each of them in based on the match up. Then there’s the budding star in the pen, one of the rare homegrown pitchers in Carl Edwards Jr. How good has he been? Well, he’s only qualifying innings away from being the league leader in WHIP. How good was he on this night? He came in after the Strop injury, and another bullpen filler in Travis Wood (who got hit), in a big jam. Then he had to face the cap killer Pujols and the franchise Trout. He got a ground ball from Albert and struck out Trout; he got the next guy too to minimize the damage to 1 run. This is just the latest example of his greatness; could he be a secret weapon come playoff time? Don’t think Strop will be 100%, and even if he feels that way, will have not pitched in 6 weeks. We will need somebody to step up.
Another guy who needs to step up, as we get back to the ways we can stop ourselves, is Tommy LaStella. Needing to make a roster move, the Cubs sent him down to Triple A. I didn’t agree with the move, and it looks like Tommy didn’t either; he has yet to report to Iowa. The thing is, it doesn’t matter what I or Tommy thinks in this situation. It was a business move; does Tommy not think he’ll be back up in September? He is… and at this point, was, our left handed bat off the bench. Now, he risks that. He risks that by going against everything Joe teaches; team before everything. I like 3am, but this doesn’t make much sense. If he doesn’t get his ass to Iowa soon, he will not be a part of this thing. That could hurt us, or Tommy could be missing out on history. Dumb move buddy.
An injury, a disgruntled teammate… yeah, these are the only things negative about the Cubs these days. At this point, the Cubs have won 9 straight and enjoy a 12 game lead in the division. That 2nd place team would arrive in Wrigley on Thursday night; the only thing I want to do when we meet the Cardinals is bash their heads in. I would be smiling soon…

Losing strop hurts but not that much. We have montgomery and smith, both mid-season pickups, as well as wood and edwards jr, both have been good this year. But what about thr grimm reaper? He seems to be getting back to form and would be a good replacement for strop, too. Maddon can mix and match based on matchups. No need to guve one guy the 7th inning exclusively. Just get it to the 8th and 9th so ronchap can slam the door! Bring on the red turds…the Cubs are streaking and have a can of you know what for them! GO CUBS GO!!!
