August 9, 2016: The Big Catch

posted in: Cubs | 1

Back when the Cubs were rebuilding, I would think of the guys I’d want to build a team around. I would think of the players that would look great wearing those home pinstripes…those guys that would be ideal on my team. I would always start with one guy.

Back then, it was Rizzo and Castro…that’s it.  It’s crazy thinking about that, and the fact that it wasn’t that long ago. Now it’s murderer’s row. The Cubs are absolutely stacked; man that was quick.  Back then and still today, the guy that visited Wrigley Field on Tuesday and Wednesday night, would be a perfect fit.

Back then, Mike Trout would have been THE guy. Imagine plugging him in at CF every day for the next 10 years. I knew the Angels wouldn’t be stupid enough to ever let him go. Still, imagine that. Now, being stacked with young studs, maybe we don’t need him. How could any team say they don’t need Mike Trout?

Nowadays, it would have to be a Herschel Walker/Ricky Williams type deal…but the Cubs could do it. Baez, schwarber, soler, Almora, Edwards maybe would get it done. You pulling that trigger?  Probably not. They probably wouldn’t move him either. But if they considered it, would you trade the mother load for Trout?

He’s absolutely wasting away in Anaheim. They have nobody around him. Oh wait, that nobody was somebody long ago. Now, Pujols is just taking up a whole lot of cap room. Ok, he isn’t that bad, but what a bad move by the Angels. How much longer do they have to pay that guy?  Maybe in a year or two he’d be good trade bait at the deadline for a team looking for that postseason bat; thought that this year. Angels would probably have to eat some of the money, but they could probably get out of it…one day.

It was a smart move, I hate to say, by the Cardinals, who ended up winning without him.  I always like that shirt when Albert was with the Redbirds:  Pujols mows my lawn.  He killed us back in the day; absolutely killed us.  One of the many Cub killers.  Now he’s just a cap killer.  Now Trout has to do it all by himself.

Trout would be the big catch for any team. On Tuesday night in Wrigley, our cap killer made a big catch. Jason Heyward is getting paid a whole lot of money to catch the ball, because he sure isn’t doing anything at the plate.  But… where I was most impressed with Heyward, and what I thought could be the silver lining in the deal, was his postseason performance last year against us. He still has time to make good on that. We haven’t needed his bat yet; we will need it then.

Cubs beat the Angels, as Trout and Pujols were a combined 0-7; nice game by Lackey. We ran our winning streak to 8 on Tuesday night. Thing is, we were only just beginning to streak…

I would not trade the mother load for trout. We have the guys to do it, but why would we need or even want to? Yes, trout in center would be awesome, and he would help without a doubt, but our young guys have been and will continue to help the Cubs. There would be no guarantees with trout, just like there is none with our young guys.
A favorite pujols shirt back with the redbirds was “the cards take it in the pujols.” HAHAHA
Cubs continue to streak behind some awesome starting pitching. I guess that break helped huh? Keep that blue train rolling! GO CUBS GO!!!
