With the trade deadline approaching, what moves will the Chicago teams make? The Sox have just won 3 out of 4 in Minnesota, and have been playing better ball. Does that make them buyers now? The Cubs are out of contention for this year. Does that make them sellers again? I’m not sure of either answer, but after some long thought about the subject, I think it’s time for the Cubs to trade Starlin Castro.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m a Starlin fan… always have been. Here’s a guy in his 5th year in the majors, who is still only 24 years old, that has already achieved 200 hits in a year. He’s been on the all-star team 3 out of 5 years. His fielding has improved, as have his mental mistakes. So why trade him?
When I say trade him, I mean, trade him for the right offer. What is the Cubs biggest need right now? Yeah, OK, almost everything I guess… but the biggest glaring need: starting pitching. Let’s just say we could move Castro for David Price… straight up. Or how about Jon Lester, in some sort of package. I’m just throwing out a few names that have been talked about in trades recently, but basically fill in the blank with your top of the rotation guy. How many guys like that would you trade Starlin for, or is Starlin untouchable?
I always had him in the untouchable category, along with Rizzo. However, with the “blue-chip” prospects lining up behind him at the position, if we could get a top of the rotation guy, why not? So Russell plays SS, and Baez at 2B. Or, would you rather trade Baez or Russell? Could the Cubs get the same return for one of those guys, as they could for a proven commodity like Starlin Castro? Which out of the three have the highest ceiling?

It’s like blasphemy coming out of my fingers typing this right now. My fantasy team SS since he’s been in the league, I have been one of his biggest supporters, and still am. I just can’t say I would 100% NOT trade him right now. I see the little things… Is this guy a leader in the clubhouse? Is this guy capped out at about 20 HRs per season, since he’s never hit more than 14 in a season? Is this a streaky type guy that will never get you 200 hits again in a season? What about his fielding, or his mental lapses? Are those completely better? Will they ever be?
When I get pissed off at Castro, it’s usually for a few reasons. First of all, he doesn’t seem to get the big hit. I haven’t researched his numbers in the clutch, or his RISP numbers, but my gut tells me they’re not that good. The second reason is the mistakes he still makes in the field. This year projects to be his best year on defense, but it’s the little things, like applying the tag at 2nd base. When the catcher throws down, let the ball lead you into the tag, and apply it aggressively. Don’t catch the ball a foot in front of the bag. Do you really trust him, I mean, really trust him with a game on the line, and an slightly above average play required from him on the field? I don’t think I can. Finally, his attitude bugs me sometimes. Sometimes he seems like a space cadet out there, kind of halfway involved in the game. He just doesn’t seem to be really IN the game.
I may be nit-picking, as I mentioned above some of the accomplishments for this still very young player. Who’s to say Baez or Russell will be any better. But I’m slowly realizing that for the right offer, I think I would move Starlin. This isn’t a move that will set the Cubs back any, this will be a move to get all the pieces in position. Starlin is a piece. Is he THE piece?

Maybe they will trade him to Atlanta for some pitching prospects. I think Lester and Price are going to go to contenders if the price (pardon the pun) is right.
