August 3, 2016: Hamstrung

posted in: Bears | 2

What a week…  for every step forward, there is a step backward.  Have to keep pushing.  We will get through the rough patch, and make it to a better place.  It’s time to do a little catch up…

Do you ever feel like you’re trying to make progress, trying to get better, but something seems to be holding you back… something seems to flare up and bite you.  Maybe it was something that needed to happen.  Maybe everything will be better afterwards.  I sure hope so… I’m tired of being hamstrung by Alshon Jeffery.

Yeah, he already has an injury.  He’s not the only one, but he’s the one with the history.  Thankfully the Bears did the smart thing with him and assigned him the franchise tag.  No way we should have invested a ton of years and cash in him… at least not yet.  We need to see him stay healthy and get through a full season on the field.  He’s already missing time; I’ve seen this movie before.

Another hamstring injury…  Is it that he just doesn’t take care of himself?  Is it that he just has bad luck?  Is he really soft?  I’m not sure, but it’s pretty frustrating.  When he does play, the Bears are a different team.  I would say he’s a legit number one when he’s healthy and on the field.  Big, tall receiver, who can go up and get it, or box out the smaller DB for a big first down catch.  If he was ever to stay healthy the whole year, you’d have to think all pro.  The ceiling is pretty high with him.

Yeah, but that ceiling was pretty high with another Chicago ball player, and injuries derailed that train, and now he’s in New York.  Will that be the path of Alshon?  Another year full of injuries causes the Bears not to sign him; then some other team takes a chance on him… because you know someone will.  Maybe we’re getting ahead of ourselves…

It is only preseason, and any little tweak, should be treated cautiously.  This is the time of the season that doesn’t matter.  So the Bears are being careful with all those guys standing on the sideline in practice; why rush them back?  No need to.

But Kyle Long got knicked up, and he was back really quick… quicker than most people thought.  He’s an important piece to this team, and he got right back.  But he doesn’t have an injury history like Alshon; so I guess I’m happy the Bears are not rushing him back.

Yet, I can’t help but think this will be an ongoing saga.  With the season around the corner, and an improved defense, we need the Bears offense to be solid.  I really do think the Bears defense will be better; not quite back to the Monsters of the Midway, but above average… ranked in the top half of the NFL defenses.  Where will the offense fall?  Alshon has a big say in that.

Let’s pocket this conversation for now, but I hope I don’t say I told you so.  I hope I’m wrong.  I hope Alshon plays all 16 and has a huge season.  That’s the outcome I’m hoping for…

One down, a handful more to go.  We don’t give up here… we keep pushing them out.  Keep on rolling, like Blaze says in my son’s cartoon.  Where we rolling to next?

Alshon is a beast when healthy, no question about it. He makes the Bears offense so much better. Problem is, he cant stay on the field. And now, another hammy? Oh boy, we all know how long and lingering those things can be. Hopefully just a tweak and nothing more serious. Definitely have to be cautious with alshon. Depending on how the Bears and alshon’s seasons go, not sure if he will be around next year. Lets just hope this hammy heals right up so he and the Bears can start and end the season with a bang! BEAR DOWN!!!
