What do you think of when you think of Seattle… Seattle’s sports teams. The fondest memory I have of a Seattle team is of one that no longer exists.
It’s the Supersonics of course. The year is 1996, and the Bulls are finishing off their 72-10 season by beating the Sonics in the NBA Finals. Those were very happy days. I do remember the Sonics before then… with Tom Chambers and Xavier McDaniel; I think it was in the movie Singles where the guy was being told, in his head, to last longer in the bed by X-Man… haha. That was a good Seattle team. They did win an NBA title up there too back in the day; it was sad to see them go.
Next up has to be the Seahawks; the recent team which I dislike. I do remember a nice playoff victory over them before the Saints NFC Championship game. Before that, I think Steve Largent and Curt Warner… and also Brian Bosworth. I think they were one of the original AFC teams before they came to the NFC a number of years ago. Can’t stand them now, mainly because of their coach. Only recent memory is the Bears getting their heads bashed in up in Seattle; the game Cutler conveniently missed, and we had to watch poor Claussen run around.
Rounding up the sports teams brings us to the Mariners, and the reason for this blog; they were in Wrigley Field this weekend. It was definitely weird to see them there; I really didn’t get to watch most of the games… except Sunday night’s ending, which was phenomenal. I used to like the Mariners, mainly for their recently inducted HOFer, Ken Griffey Jr.
He was one of my favorite players. We imitated him many times in our backyard whiffle ball games. He was awesome to watch play ball. Of course that slide comes to mind… the one where he scored from first on Edgar’s shot down the line. All the great catches he made, and not once any idea of steroid use. He was the natural. He also had one of the best baseball cards of all time. I remember being on vacation up in Michigan, and buying an Upper Deck pack for $1.50… which was way more expensive than those 40 cent packs of Topps with the stick of gum. As I looked through the pack, there it was… the Ken Griffey Jr rookie card. One of the many great cards in my collection.

On to the recent version of the team. They have one of my favorite pitchers in the game, a fantasy baseball regular on my team, King Felix. I like that section in left field in Safeco where they all wear those King Felix shirts, and flash the K signs every time he strikes somebody out. He was out for a while this year, but was on the mound in the Sunday nighter. He was effectively wild, holding the Cubs to only 2 runs I believe; he threw a ton of pitches in his 5 innings. Still, Seattle held a 6-3 lead into the 9th inning…
Then the Cubs made one of their best comebacks of the year. Originally down 6-0, they still needed those 3 in the 9th. Fast forward to bases loaded, 1 out, down 2. Contreras’ hustle paid off, just beating the double play, extending the inning, now only down 6-5. I love that guy. Then the wild pitch was uncorked about 3 feet outside, and the game was tied. The ending was even better, and that’s not to mention the catch by Travis Wood in left field… yes, left field…earlier in the game.
The struggling Heyward lead off the inning, and missed a game winning HR by a couple feet, but found himself on 3rd base with 1 out after a long fly ball off the bat of Contreras. With Rondon’s spot up next, and no position players left, I thought it would be Jake to pinch hit; but Joe decided something else. Jon Lester stepped to the plate. Definitely questioned that move, but Genius Joe made me eat my words. Lester laid down a bunt with 2 strikes. Heyward got a fabulous jump and slid barely ahead of the tag. What a win… a signature win maybe?
Another memory for a Seattle team? I think I will remember this game… especially pending the outcome of this year. Next up, the Miami Marlins come to town, and I’ll be back in the house on Tuesday. Yeah! Go Cubs!!!

Sonics with kemp, the glove, and detlef.
Cant stand the chawks either.
Griff was the natural…what a swing, speed, and a gold glover! He has to be one of the best ever. I remember that upper deck rookie card…pretty crazy! He deserves his hall nod.
What a Cubs comeback! Down 6-0 after 3 and 6-3 in the 9th, they never quit. Contreras’ hustle to beat that double play was great…one of those plays not in the stat sheets. Maddon makes the right call again, lester gets the bunt down, and heyward beats the play at the plate. Great Cubs W…will be remembered for sure!
GO CUBS GO!!!
