At this point in the season, most teams have figured out where they are going. They know if they are good enough to make a push, or realize that it may be time to start looking ahead. It seems easy enough, but it’s really not. To buy or to sell is sometimes a difficult question.
For the Cubs, it’s an easy one. They are buyers, and have already made a couple moves. I believe by the end of the day Monday, that another move will be made. They are going for it, and I love it. I love it because I remember not too long ago, the Cubs selling away at the trade deadline. Those days are gone thankfully. Which starting pitcher will make his way to the Cubs? Who will go… Soler? Stay tuned.
For the Sox, this is a hard question. It certainly seems like this year is done. With the Indians’ big lead, the division seems out of reach. With all the teams within wild card contention, and most of those teams ahead of the Sox, that seems like a tall order too. So OK, let’s just go with the assumption that the Sox will not make the playoffs this year. Does that automatically make them sellers?

Not so clear cut I think. With last year’s high expectations and flop, and this year’s awesome start and fade, Sox fans are getting pretty frustrated. Who is to say next year it won’t all come together? When you start looking ahead, how far ahead do you look? The Sox like to stay competitive each year, and they have been… if a .500 record is the definition. They had a bad year in there too, but overall, they’re usually right on the brink: the brink of the playoffs which they haven’t seen in a while, and the brink of bad, which they have avoided most years. However, that leaves you in limbo… where do you go from here?
There are definitely some pieces, with one of the best pitchers in baseball, along with one of the best number twos. The kid SS is really good. How many pieces are they away from getting past the brink? That’s the question. Trading Sale or Quintana HAS to make you a better team, if not this year, then next. Does trading one of those guys make the Sox better? It has to, or it shouldn’t be done. They should get the mother load for Sale and a nice haul for Quintana. Will it get done? Not sure, but the Sox did trade a left handed pitcher… Zach Duke was sent to the Cardinals. A drop in the bucket.
What will Monday hold? It will be interesting to see everything go down, or not. I like the Cubs to make another move, and I really don’t see the Sox doing anything… at least anything major… and I’m not sure if that’s a good or bad thing. The Cubs are doing something… I feel like the Sox should do something too, but just not for the sake of doing it. If they pull the trigger, it has to be franchise changing. Will there be a willing partner? That is another key question. August 1st is here.

Easy calls for the Cubs, not so easy for the sox. Cubs are definitely buyers as they try to solidify their position in the nl and mlb for postseason play. The sox shot at the playoffs seems like a long one, but it does not mean they need to be sellers. Standing pat is a tough call in itself, but sometimes the pieces just dont come together to pull the trigger. Chap and montgomery should and will play big roles for the Cubs…103mph fastball to win it??? YES PLEASE!
