July 25, 2016: Wakey Wakey

posted in: Cubs, White Sox | 1

Woke up this morning, got myself a Cubs t-shirt.  I’ve been wearing those a lot lately, but for the next 4 days, it will be a constant.  My Cubs hat will be part of my daily work attire.  Wakey wakey, and no I’m not talking to David Backes laying unconscious on the ice…it’s crosstown time!!!

Some people may say it doesn’t mean as much as it used to.  A few months ago, we were predicting one of the best ever Cubs Sox matchups with the way both teams started blazing out of the gates.  Since then, the Sox have fell on their face, and now the luster is gone?  I’m not so sure about that.  For the fans, it is kind of a big deal.

For all Sox fans, it’s a really big deal.  It’s always a bigger deal for the team not doing so well.  This is why that team usually comes out on top.  Throw the records out the window; they don’t matter in this series.  Bragging rights are on the line, and again, for the team that doesn’t have much to look forward to, it’s much more important.

Of course the Sox have the ultimate bragging rights here.  I’m ready to see all those 2005 World Series Championship T-shirts.  If you go to any of the games, this is the Sox shirt you will see the most.  Or maybe it will be the one that says “Hey Cubs Fans” with a middle finger that has the World Series ring on it; that’s a fan favorite.  Yes, the ultimate bragging rights lay on the South Side, and yes, Sox fans definitely live in the past.  Hold on to 2005… that’s all you got.

My question for Sox fans when this Cubs Sox thing starts, is who will win the next one?  Of course, trying to downplay the one ring… you know, the one us Cubs fans have never seen, I look forward to which Chicago team will win the next World Series, because for us Cubs fans, there is no reason to live in the past.  It’s a big black hole.  Yes, there were great memories and great teams, but not the ultimate.  This is why I feel pretty good about that argument; the Cubs have a pretty good chance this year to get out of that black hole, and bring a World Series to all Cubs fans.  Once that happens, I really do think the Sox should just move out of town.

That’s why this series isn’t as meaningful to the Cubs.  There are bigger fish to fry this year then our cross town neighbors.  Of course I don’t want to lose to the Sox; this is the week that I hate them.  I want to smash them like a bug on the windshield.  I want to steamroll them, and put them out of their misery.  I want to put a dagger in another losing season.  But, I’d sacrifice all of that… and pretty much anything else… for the Cubs to win when it really counts.  Of course I’m trying to prepare myself if the Sox do actually take 3 of 4, or worst yet, sweep.

But looking at the pitching match ups, it’s pretty brutal.  The Cubs have to contend with Miguel Gonzalez, James Shields, and honestly I can’t even think of the other Sox starter right now… would it be Jacob Turner?  Anyways, expect for at least one of them to have a career performance.  There are usually a handful of those in this series; guys will make a name for themselves with a big series against the other Chicago team.

So regardless of the records, this series does still matter.  It may not matter much to the players; some members of the media may downplay it.  But the truth is, it’s all about the fans.  There are many bets being made across the city.  There will be heightened interest… trying to make that extra effort… to watch these games.  Everybody will be representing.  Let’s just not get too stupid out there.

Because on the day the Cross Town series begins, we celebrate a man that ALL of us can appreciate.  Walter Payton would have been 62 today; talk about the good dying young.  We can always rely on the Bears to bring us together, but for the next 4 days, it’s one or the other.  It’s time for the red line series to begin; GO CUBS!

Cubs vs sox, always interesting for the city and fans. No matter the record or place in the standings, these games are usually competitive and fun. I agree that these games this year mean more to the sox as far as where they go from here. Are they trying to stay in the race or ready to be sellers? The deadline looms after this series. The Cubs made 2 moves already, any more coming? Maybe a starter or veteran bat to pinch hit? We shall see. Enjoy the series Chicago, bragging rights are up for grabs, but we all know which team is better regardless of the outcome. GO CUBS GO!!!
