Wednesday night was a memorable evening. I went to my first Sox game in a couple years, and the news broke that Dwyane Wade signed with the Bulls. It reminded me of another Sox game I went to long ago…
I’ve documented it here before. It was in 1985, and the Sox were playing the California Angels. That same night the Bears were playing the Vikings on Thursday night football. Every TD that McMahon threw in that comeback victory was shown on the big screen, and the crowd went nuts. The crowd didn’t go nuts yesterday, but there was definitely some buzz in the air. My wife must not have been on Twitter, because the news broke when my brother in law got a text from my sister.
I didn’t know how to feel. I’m still not sure if I know how to feel. It wasn’t as if I was jumping up and down. Leading up to this signing, when they mentioned the Bulls as “in the running”, I thought it was a joke… plus I didn’t even want him. I used to like Dwyane Wade.
He’s a Chicago area kid. I root for most of those guys, and when he and Shaq won in Miami, I was happy for him. Then of course there came the whole LeBum thing… Back then it was rumored that he was coming to Chicago too, but it turned out to be smoke and mirrors. He was using us… playing with our emotions. Of course back then, 6 years ago, it would have been a whole different feeling if Wade had come here. The Bulls were at the opening of their window, and Wade was a top player. For that whole debacle, I hated him. I hated that Miami Heat team. And now he’s a Bull… so much for getting younger.

I guess I’m OK with it… what choice do I have. First Rondo, and now Wade; 2 guys I disliked are now donning my team’s uniform. I would rip Rondo all the time… I guess it wasn’t much different than Pau Gasol when the Bulls got him; I used to rip him too. I remember hating Rondo when he got into it with Captain Kirk. Didn’t Rondo and Wade have an altercation too? Well, now they’re part of the Bulls “big 3” with Jimmy. But back to the Sox game…
Sox scored 4 of their 5 runs in the 2nd inning with 2 outs. They held onto the shutout after a long review in the 9th followed by a strikeout. The Sox have been playing good ball. They are in the middle of the AL Wild Card race; it could still be a good summer on the South Side.
It was a memorable night, not only for the Wade signing. The reason I was at the Sox game was our Father’s Day gift to my dad. My brother, brother in law, and I were with my dad on this night. It started at Ricobene’s, which in my opinion has the best sandwich in the city; it ended there after the shuttle brought us back from the game. In between, it was fun spending time together… it always is. The game was fun, the news was interesting, but the night was most memorable for that. What’s next?

i agree……not with all the crap about wade et al, but about it being a good nite for us all. i still enjoy the times together, maybe even moreso now that they are fewer and farther between. but i understand that you all have young families and that’s where your priorities lie, as they should. so, until next ‘outing’ thanx for last nite.

Always enjoy hanging out…sox came through with a victory, and nothing beats a breaded steak sandwich and fries from Ricobenes!
Dwade to the Bulls…few years too late but he can and will still make a difference. Bulls have their own big 3 with rondo, buckets, and wade…how big they will be is the question. Hopefully, they put their egos aside and buy into fredberg’s plan and lead the rest of the Bulls back to the playoffs!
