June 26, 2016: Cubs in NYC

posted in: Cubs | 1

Being out of town sucks… I don’t get to watch any Cubs games.  That, plus the fact I was busy at work…  Well, it all led to my decision on my off day on Sunday.  I had to watch the Cubs.  Right across the river from New York City, there had to be a place that showed the Cubs game, right?

Right.  Looking up “watching a Cubs game in New York City” brought me to my destination on Sunday afternoon:  Kelly’s Sports Bar.  It was quite a trek from the Port Authority… where I ended up after my bus traveled through the Lincoln Tunnel.  $8.50 round trip ticket… not too bad.  It wasn’t game time yet, and I had another stop I wanted to make.  It was Sunday after all, and figured I would try to make it to church, and did… at St. Patrick’s Cathedral.  But before that…  on the way there, I ran into a street fest.  I’m not exactly sure what it was for, but this is one of the reasons I love New York… there’s always something going on, especially a good old street fest.  So I walked it… I never did make it to the end as it seemed to go on forever.  I cut off the route to make it to the 12pm mass.

It is a beautiful church… huge, and packed full of people.  It lasted about 50 minutes, and that brought me to 20 minutes before game time.  I had some serious walking to do, but that’s another thing I love about New York… you can walk, and walk, and walk, and the city never ends.  So that’s what I did.  It was the Pride parade today too, so there were tons of people getting ready to celebrate.  There was another street fest, and a couple other celebrations going on… the city was jumping.  Meanwhile, about an hour later, I made it to my destination.

It doesn’t seem like much from the outside, and reminded me of my old corner bar back in Chicago a bit… there were only 3 people in there when I walked in during the top of the 4th inning.  The score was tied 1-1; OK, time to watch some Cubs baseball.

It wasn’t until late in the game that another Cubs fan joined me at the bar; I thought there would be more.  From talking to the bartender, he said there usually is.  Maybe all the soccer stuff going on Sunday, plus everything else in the city, plus the beautiful day, led to a small turnout.  He said it wasn’t exactly like that last October…

He said they are the ONLY Cubs bar in NYC.  During the playoff run last year, especially the series against the Mets, there were news stations and broadcasters galore, interviewing folks, etc.  I asked him if there were a lot of Mets fans that came in there, and he said NO.  He said it was a blast, the place was jumping.  We know the result in the NLCS wasn’t what we were looking for, but other than that, a great time.  Funny enough… I’ll be back for a wedding in NYC this October…

Back to the game… and it wasn’t pretty.  It was a good game until the Marlins blew it open in the bottom of the 8th.  I wanted a chance in the 9th against their closer in a close ball game, although I was surprised to hear he had closed out 33 in a row.  A glance at the NL East standings and it’s bunched at the top.. with the Nationals, Mets, and yes, Marlins.  We ran into this team at the wrong time.  We’ve been scuffling, and they’ve been hot… it happens during this 162 season… losing 3 of 4 to the Fish happens… losing 6 out of 7 games in a week happens too I guess.

It’s by far the worst week of the season.  Can’t get much worse than that.  So now that we’ve hit our low point, it’s time to get back on that roller coaster and head up the hill… back to where we were.  Although looking at the NL Central standings, the Cubs still have a solid 9 game lead over the Cards.

I’m heading back home on Monday, but the Cubs are not… they are in the midst of a long road trip. heading to Cincy next, then back to NYC to face the Mets in an NLCS rematch.  This week will be one of those good tests for our Cubbies.  We know they’ve been kicking ass this year… how will they bounce back from getting their ass kicked?

The season marches on.  You didn’t think it would be that easy did you?  Time to focus back in and get some W’s.  We know they can do that, now let’s see it.  Winning is a lot better than losing.  Go Cubs!

Tough week for the Cubs…losing 3of4 to the fish hurts. They are definitely a team to hate. Pretty cool how there are out of town sports bars in other cities…like that Bears bar in LA, that was cool! Time for the Cubbies to put that rough week behind them and start showing why they are the best team in baseball again…watch out reds! GO CUBS GO!!!
