June 12, 2016: Starting Well

posted in: Cubs | 1

The Cubs closed out the series with the Braves on Sunday with another win.  They took the series against the worst team in the majors (whew!) and kept on rolling.  It was Jon Lester throwing a gem in this one.

He’s been the Jon Lester that we paid all that money for.  An 8-3 record and a 1.89 ERA is exactly what we were hoping when he was brought aboard last year.  It’s great to see him do so well.  He’s not alone.

The 1-2 punch with him and Jake have been the best in the majors.  A combined 18-4 between the two.  And it doesn’t stop there.  Lackey and Hammel are both 7-2!  So the top 4 starters, after a little quick math, are a combined 32-8!  That has to be the best in the majors.  That’s just crazy!

There’s no way they could keep this up, right?  Well, I thought the same about Jake coming into this year, and so far so good.  I did think Lester would turn it around, and thankfully he has.  I wasn’t sure how Lackey would do, coming off his great year last year; he’s been a greater addition than I thought.  The biggest reason I was excited about his acquisition was when it came to the postseason; we’re not there yet.  And then there’s Hammel…  the first half All-Star.  Each of the past 3 years, he’s been awesome in the first half… so this should have been expected.  The question for him comes post-All Star break.  We’re not there yet.

For all the talk about the Cubs offense, which is really good most of the time, the starters have been carrying us.  Now what about the bullpen?  They’ve been good.  Richard and Grimm have been struggling though.  If I’m thinking about adding anything down the stretch, it’s definitely in the bullpen.  The Yankees have a couple big left handed arms..

What are you willing to give up for Aroldis Chapman or Andrew Miller?  Soler?  Baez?  Schwarber?  I don’t want to give up anything…haha.  But I do think the addition of one of those arms would be extremely helpful.  If I had to choose one, it would be Soler.  With the call up of Almora, and we really haven’t seen much of him yet, except defensively where he’s been phenomenal, Soler seems like the odd man out.  Yes, we don’t know about Fowler’s future after this year, but it’s about this year right?  Right, but… you don’t want to throw away what has been built up either.  It’s a fine line, but I think we do have enough in the cupboards to bring one of those arms to Wrigley.

Where else should we add?  I was thinking another starter at the beginning of the season, but now… not so sure.  Bullpen definitely ranks one.  With the offensive depth, and more to grab from the minors (aka the stud catcher Contreras), I’m thinking another starter would be nice too.  Don’t think the addition of another bat is necessary, but I guess the more the merrier.

Starting well is an understatement.  Historically good year?  Maybe.  Does winning in the regular season guarantee postseason success?  No, but it sure doesn’t hurt.  Let’s keep rolling, and adding if we can.  This is fun… I want this to be fun in October too.

I think an arm for the pen is needed…miller from nyy sounds good. Giving up soler would not be easy but necessary to get miller…all in this year if needed? Maybe, but might not be needed. I also think another starter would be nice as long as the price is right. Hendricks being the 5th man right now is a luxury, but if the Cubs could improve upon him at a reasonable price, why not? It never hurts to have pitching depth!
