While the opposite was happening on Friday, Saturday brought more of a normal result for our baseball teams.
The Cubs handled the Braves. Jake pitched well. Heyard, Rizzo, Montero, and Bryant all went deep. That’s more like it.
The Sox got handled by Danny Duffy and the Royals. The Royals broke their 8 game losing streak, and resumed, along with Duffy, in their domination of the White Sox. One step forward, one step backward.
The Cubs are now 42-18; that’s a 70% win clip. That’s a pace of 113 wins. They are 9 games clear of the Cardinals, who have taken over 2nd place in the division. So far, the season has been better than our best expectations. So far…
The Sox are now 31-31. Remember when they were the 2nd best team in baseball? They’ve crashed back down to earth, but they’re still not in a bad place. With Hahn continuing to make moves to try to improve the team, and the AL Central not as good as predicted, I’m not counting the Sox out yet. Did I think they would be the 2nd best team in baseball? Uh, no. But I did think they’d be in the mix for a playoff spot, and through 62 games, they’re only 4 games out of 1st and 3.5 games out of the wild card. Keep the faith Sox fans.

The Cubs have had their share of injuries, but they’ve marched on. Imagine if Schwarby was healthy? You don’t think he could have counted for a few more Ws? I do, especially when the offense struggles. Montero has been on the DL, Soler and LaStella are now, Rizzo sat out a game with back issues as did Rondon the other day. The #1 thing that could derail the Cubs has reared its head. So far, the train rolls on.
The Sox have been pretty healthy. You know it’s just amazing the run support that Quintana gets. We’ve talked about it before, but thanks to Christopher Kamka of CSN, we can see just how sick it has been. Here are the runs scored by the White Sox in the 17 Quintana losses the past 2 years: 1, 0, 1, 1, 1, 0, 0, 1, 1, 3, 2, 1, 1, 3, 0, 2, 1…. That’s 19 runs in 17 games!!! That’s just mind boggling.
And back to Jake for a minute. 10-1 on the season. I’ll be honest. I didn’t think he’d be as good as he was last year. I’m glad I was wrong. The entire Cubs starting pitching staff has been amazing. They have truly been the reason why the record is where it’s at. They just haven’t needed that many runs to win. Between Jake, Lester, and Hammel, there have been 22 starts that they’ve allowed 1 earned run or less. 22! Now that I think about that number, I’m just as stunned. Talk about wow!
Yeah, it’s been that kind of season so far. The Cubs and Sox start… wow. The Cubs keeping it up… wow. The Sox falling as quickly as they did… wow. Those amazing stats above… wow. Although Saturday was normalized, this season has been anything but normal. And we’re not even at the All Star break yet. I love baseball. Go Cubs!

The starting pitching for the Cubs has been outstanding. Jake is picking up where he left off, lester and hammel are having great years like I figured, and hendricks and lackey are making believers out of me. With the offense in high gear, it is no wonder the Cubs are where they are…at the top!
Unreal stat on quintana…the sox must hate him…hahaha.
