June 1, 2016: Taking Vegas

posted in: Bears, Blackhawks, Bulls, Cubs, White Sox | 1

I landed in Vegas and immediately started drinking. Rented a limo, stopped at a liquor store, and off I was. 0 to 60 and it wasn’t even dark outside. Throwing money down at the tables left and right, winning some, losing some.  By the end of the night, who could tell. Would I wake up with a bunch of chips in my pocket or any empty wallet?  Why was I sleeping on the floor?

Memories…. Going to Las Vegas with your family is a whole different ballgame.  The priorities change from drinking and gambling to swimming with my son and finding a nice place for dinner. The $2 Heineken and hot dog would just not do. On this particular visit, I didn’t gamble one penny the first day. It was partly about those priorities that I mentioned, and partly because I was trying to avoid that early hole which I historically dig. Coming out of day one even, put me ahead of the curve.

We landed in Vegas and after gathering all the luggage, hopped in a cab. The cab driver, yeah, he was from Chicago.  It’s a funny thing…being “from Chicago”. When outside the state of Illinois, it’s common for people to claim Chicago from a hundred mile radius. When in state, you damn well know that you ain’t from Chicago when you live in Arlington Heights or Rolling Meadows.  The next follow up question after somebody says they’re from Chicago is, where at?  Then you really know.

There’s no doubt where I’m from, and no doubt where our cab driver was from. An ex-cop from the district where I currently reside. This led to us immediately hitting it off, and eventually, a pretty good tip for him. As the conversation went to sports, I plugged my blog, and now have another follower. @jski22 for all those in the twitter verse looking for a daily feed. Unless I’m on vacation, then you get some catch up shit.

He was a Cubs fan too.  We talked a little bit about the Cubs sox shit talking that goes on, and how I’m familiar with every burn each way. I think I’ll list those during the crosstown series.  Anyways, he gave me some guys to follow too….some Vegas cabbies that should lead to some interesting reading.

I always thought this blog would be especially useful for those Chicago transplants..the people who aren’t hearing this stuff daily, aren’t talking about it constantly, aren’t in the midst of it. I remember how that was living in LA…

So good conversation, good tip, and a new Twitter follower (thanks!) were all my first day highlights….that was my taking Vegas by storm. Yes, there were plenty more, but I am trying to keep this somewhat about Chicago sports.

So let’s stop there for my first retro post.  Again, the first day was uneventful from a gambling perspective…that changed the next 2 days. We’ll get into that next.

Nothing like headed to vegas…drinking at the airport and on the plane, no matter what time. Playing cards on the plane. Stopping for liquor as soon as we got off the plane. Turning our room sinks and tubs into coolers full of ice and beer. Some days never made it to the night without taking a nap, not by choice…hahaha. That’s the great thing about vegas, it never sleeps. You can eat, drink, and gamble whenever you want or are awake…hahaha! Always Chicago fans in vegas, too. Even for games, Chicago fans are always well represented, especially for the Cubs, Bears, and Hawks! Hopefully a slow day one being even leads to some gains in the next few…
