May 22, 2016: The Other Good Teams

posted in: Cubs, White Sox | 1

This weekend provided some great match-ups for both the Cubs and the Sox.  This weekend did not provide the best results.  The other good teams won the series in each case.

The Cubs started off well.  Well, that’s because we had Jake on the mound.  Although to be fair, the Cubs have had awesome starting pitching across the board.  They had one of the longest streaks ever for starters going at least 5 innings.  Well, that ended Saturday as Lester got knocked around.  He’s been a lot better this year… more in line with that monster deal we gave him.  Saturday just wasn’t his day.

The starting pitching was back in good form for Sunday’s rubber game, but problem was, it was MadBum on the bump for the Giants.  1-0 was the outcome.  We had our chance in the 1st inning.  After getting the first 2 batters, he hit Bryant, gave up a hit from Zobrist, and walked Soler I think.  Then came up Russell, who had a decent at bat, before getting rung up looking.  That was the best chance we had, and we missed it.  Sometimes that’s how it works with these great pitchers.  You only have 1-2 chances all game long, sometimes in the very first inning.  If you don’t get to them then, you’re done.  And the Cubs were… done.

Back in Chicago, the Sox welcomed the defending World Series champs in Kansas City.  The result was the same, losing 2 out of 3.  Quintana had his worst outing in forever, giving up 4 runs… yeah, 4 runs.  He’s been so good for so long, you have to cut him some slack.  On Saturday, Miguel Gonzalez actually threw the ball well, but the offense was non-existent.  They had their chances too though.

I actually tuned in to a bit of this game.  I turned it on to watch Lorenzo Cain go deep to give the Royals the 2-0 lead.  I was watching in the 7th, when the Sox loaded the bases for Abreu with nobody out.  Here it was.  It’s the 7th inning, and here is the White Sox golden opportunity.  Abreu grounded into a double play, and KC ended up getting out of the inning only allowing 1 run.  Sox lost 2-1.  They were able to avoid the sweep, and win the final game on Sunday with Rodon throwing one of his better games.  Still, another series dropped by the Sox.

Both baseball teams had rough weeks.  Yes, they are still both in first place in their respective divisions, but it’s a long haul ahead.  If it were a sprint, the Cubs and Sox would have won.  We all know it’s a marathon, and they both had a bumpy stretch.  All you could do is move on.  There is barely any rest in a baseball season.  Sometimes playing weeks without a day off.  You have to learn whatever you can from the losses and move on… or else this bumpy stretch could turn into a ditch.  We don’t want that.

And yeah, there is that other thing.  There are other good teams in the majors that don’t play in Chicago.  I know, I know… hard to believe, but it’s true.  KC and SF will be there at the end too.  St. Louis is next up for the Cubs, and they’re not going anywhere.  The Sox have another tough division opponent up next in Cleveland.  If Chicago is going to continue to rule the baseball world, we need to win series after series.  We can’t win every single game, but we should definitely try to win every series.  Yes, 100 wins is what that would equal stretched out over 162, and that’s exactly where I want to be for the regular season.  That should guarantee a division win, and home playoff games.  Let’s make it happen… forget about these other teams.  Let’s get back to racking up those W’s.

Tough teams, tough series. It is going to happen. Sf had won 8 in a row before getting shit down by Jake, but they got right back at it winning the final two. KC is the defending champs, and they are not going anywhere. Dont look in the rearview mirrors now, just get back to playing winning baseball!
