Do you ever feel like punching someone? I do, but we restrain ourselves. Definitely can’t do that in a business setting; just stand up and punch somebody in a meeting. Or how about road rage? Get out of your car, and run up to somebody and punch them. Heck, with all the gun violence out there, maybe we should encourage punching as a way to let out some frustration… a lot better than the alternative. The best alternative would be no violence at all, but I’m just saying…
Rougned Odor let out some frustration on the baseball field this past Sunday. That was probably the cleanest, most effective punch I’ve ever seen on a baseball field. It reminded me of the Michael Barrett punch of AJ… That was awesome by the way.
In Odor’s case, it was some frustration release for not only him and the Rangers, but the entire Texas fan base. Last year, a painful loss, was played up even more by the bat toss heard round the world by Jose Bautista. I’m OK with a little showmanship, but I do think that went a little far. I understand because of the moment… a playoff game, what had just happened a few innings earlier in that game…. I get it, I do. But still… that bat flip was over the top.
Fast forward to Sunday’s game… and I don’t know the entire chain of events that have happened since then between the teams, but Texas finally decided to strike back and plunk Bautista. He ended up sliding late at 2nd on a ground ball. That was a very dangerous play. He waited to slide until he was almost on the base, and if Odor hadn’t moved his knee, he could have got seriously hurt. It was a dirty play… of course, he was pissed he just got hit. But then Odor got pissed, and I’m sure all those feelings from the season ender last year came back, as he unloaded on Bautista. BAM! Punch out!

Thinking back to the Barrett punch… which I had as my screensaver for a number of weeks by the way, was that Cubs Sox rivalry fueled reaction. We can go back and forth about rooting for the other Chicago team throughout the season, but I think we’re all in agreement when the 2 teams get together, it’s an all-out civil war. In fact, I avoid these games nowadays to avoid the BS. However, since both teams are not historically used to postseason appearances, these were as close to a playoff game that we got. The ballpark comes more alive than ever… emotions running high. Lots of emphatic cheering… Lots of crap talking. That Barrett punch was the release of that on the field…as if there wasn’t enough of that going on off the field. It couldn’t have happened to a better guy in AJ Pierzynski; one of those guys you love when he’s on your team, but hate when he’s on the other. That was one of the signature moments of the rivalry.
Nowadays, with both teams doing well, maybe we can become more accustomed to postseason performances; that’s what I’m looking forward to. Still, the fact that both teams are good will amp up this year’s crosstown classic even more. Let’s not get too stupid out there people. That’s a hard thing to ask, especially when the alcohol will be flowing. OK, how about this…
If you just can’t contain yourselves, and need to let it out, let’s keep it to a punch. Punch 2016 if you may. Let’s leave it at that… no bats, knives, guns. Let’s leave it at a good old fashioned brawl. People will get hurt, but not seriously. Maybe we can call it the Cross Town fight club. And let’s do that away from the park, and the kids and families. If you want to be complete idiots about the whole thing, let’s do it in the proper setting… although that’s not what idiots do.
What I’m trying to say here is, I understand the frustration, the emotions, the passion that goes on with our teams; trust me, I do. Let’s practice self control above all, but if that fails, let’s settle it with a good old fashioned fistacuffs… nothing more. Let’s get a grip out there people. But as I always say, it’s not good to hate, and even worse to harbor these feelings, so let it out. Punch out! BAM!

Bautista got odorized…what a punch! Too bad he will pay with an 8 game suspension now. It was probably worth it at the time. And he only got that many games because of how well the punch landed. If it missed or just grazes bautista, no way odor gets 8 games. That is the price to pay for landing such a bomb!
Barrett did get a great shot in against aj…only thing you remember him for. Those crosstown games get crazy…been there, done that. Not worth it any more. Stay at home and watch in comfort not having to worry about all the drunk idiots. My how things have changed…hahaha!
