I thought it wasn’t supposed to rain. As I was driving home from work yesterday, the rain drops started to fall. At least we had seats in the 200 level under the overhang, so we wouldn’t get wet. But by the time I got home, and took the dog out, the rain had stopped, and the sun had come out, and it actually felt warmer outside. Now, this is how it was supposed to be.
Needed to check off some things before leaving for both myself and my son: Cubs hat, Cubs jersey, blue sweatshirt to wear underneath, snacks, extra pants and underwear just in case (that one was only for my son!). I think we were all set, and I didn’t even have to worry about parking, as my wife dropped us off a block away.
Now to get some bottled water and peanuts outside the park, because “it’s cheaper than inside” is what they say. $2 for a bottle of water? Yep, price went up… it’s like $4.50 inside. And $5 for a small bag of peanuts… I forgot to check that price in Wrigley. Now to the gate.
On the way to the gate, my son was excited about all the W’s… pointing to them in the windows of the buildings around Wrigley. He also noted the number of people heading into the stadium. Yes, it was a Wednesday night game against the Padres in May, but there was still a respectable turnout; I think it was 31,000+. The metal detectors weren’t too bad. The only thing that delayed us was the person checking through the Paw Patrol bag of sweatshirts, underwear, pants, and snacks. I was hoping my son didn’t leave his knife in there… just kidding. We got the green light… finally… and into Wrigley we went.
“I’m hungry” is the first thing I heard. Hot Dog and French Fries= $11.25… to our seats we go!
It was a good game. Lackey pitched well… a perfect game into the 5th in fact. Until a moonshot was hit into the night sky by their catcher Betancourt. He stared it down a bit… but so did we. It was a massive shot… love to know the distance of that one. That turned out to be all San Diego needed.

In the first inning, we had two on base; a typical Cubs start. We did not cash in; non-typical Cubs. We did not cash in all night; we certainly had our chances.
Soler had the best chances, and took advantage of his start and opportunity to the tune of 4 Ks. The biggest one came in the 8th inning with 2 outs and the bases loaded. An Alexei Ramirez dropped pop up, followed by an unintentional intentional walk to Rizzo, set the stage. The crowd was the loudest it had been all night; my son was covering his ears. When Soler struck out, there weren’t many boos, but a whole lot of grumbling. His extremely slow start may earn him a ticket to Iowa.
The best part of the game was the 7th inning stretch, as my son and I counted 1, 2, 3 strikes you’re out together. It’s my favorite part of being at Wrigley with my son; a true father son moment in my eyes. And that’s what this night was all about…
It wasn’t about the Cubs getting shutout, getting swept in the day night doubleheader, or losing their first consecutive games of the year. It wasn’t about Soler sucking big time, Maddon choosing not to pinch hit, or the decision to not start Zobrist or Russell in this one. It was about me and my son.
And as we lined up to exit the park after the final out was made, and made our way down the stairs to the concourse, I popped him up on my shoulders. And as we headed to the exit, I could hear him singing “Take Me Out to the Ball Game”… At that point, I didn’t care about the fact that the Cubs lost the game… I was still flying the W.
