May 7, 2016: Zorilla

We’ve had a Big Z already.  Carlos Zambrano was one of my favorites, until he finally started to lose it completely.  He brought some serious passion to the game.  He was good for a long time… longer than even Prior or Wood.  I remember a lot of moments with him.  One of the best was the no hitter he threw against Houston in Milwaukee; now that’s something you don’t see every day.

How about Big Ben?  We all know that sleazy QB from the Steelers.  That Super Bowl vs Seattle was one of the most fixed games; sick of the Steelers.  And Ben… a slimeball with the ladies, the young ladies, should be close to being put out to pasture.  What about Zo?  You remember, Alonzo Mourning.  I like that Charlotte team back in the day with Larry Johnson and Kendall Gill.  They were one of my favorites to use on NBA Jam.  Didn’t like him much with the Heat.  But we’re not talking about any of those guys here.

No, we have a totally new nickname to roll with describing one of the Cubs prized offseason acquisitions.  Ben Zobrist is Zorilla.

He certainly has been lately.  4 HRs and 12 RBIs in the last 4 games will certainly get him the nod for player of the week.  Both he and Lackey, another new guy, were featured in Friday’s afternoon victory over the 2nd best team in the NL.  I was more excited when we got Zobrist..

Getting Heyward was cool too.  I liked him when he first came into the league… well, not really, because he tagged the above mentioned Big Z for a couple HRs on Opening Day in Atlanta that year.  But I liked his game.  To me, he has never really lived up to the hype, and I thought was a tad overrated getting all that money.  Now, he has an injury to explain why he is not batting his weight yet?  OK, it’s still early, and I guess the one thing that I DID like about Jason, besides his awesome defense, was his postseason performance last year.  Again, not really because it was against us, but to have another primetime performer may come in pretty handy come October.

And that’s why I liked Lackey too.  I wasn’t that excited about getting him… I was looking for Price or another A pitcher… not some old guy with a lot of wear on that arm.  Figuring he would not match his numbers from last year in St. Louis, and thinking the Cubs would get him some rest throughout the campaign, again, I was just hoping for that October greatness.  He hasn’t been great thus far, with a 4 something ERA, but with the Cubs bats and his competitive, funny personality, I’m starting to like him more and more.

That brings us to Zorilla…. a jack of all trades if you will.  An ex-Maddon player, switch hitter, who plays all positions except catcher, who has a World Series ring from last year, who seems to fit right into this clubhouse, yeah, he was my favorite offseason move by Theo and company.  And man, has he been on fire lately.  Crushing that ball…

This team has been built to win now.  This team has been built to win in the 162 and in bonus time.  At 23-6, this team is meeting expectations thus far.  Although not everybody on the team is… well, to think about it, almost everybody is contributing, the fact it is coming from all different angles makes us even more dangerous.  The fact that we added talent to this already talented roster in the offseason makes this team even scarier.  6-0 against the top teams in the NL this past week… 1 more on Sunday makes it 7… and oh yeah, who’s on the mound for us looking for his perfect 7.  Go.  Cubs.  GO!!!

The perfect storm! A very young and talented roster with additions of veteran guys who have been there, won that. Heyward is not hitting very well, but he will. His D has been great. Lackey gobbles up innings and should continue to get run support. And Zorilla or Zobrilla can do it all. These 3 signings have and will be important to this year’s Cubs. And who knows what piece or pieces may be picked up at the summer deadline. If need be, the Cubs will be buyers. Imagine big Z playing for maddon…pretty sure he would be loving it, just like we are now. Keep rollin Blue train…GO CUBS GO!!!
