Yeah, I know.. original title. But do you know, that I ensure there are no duplicate titles on my blog… over 2 years running, and not one duplicate title. I check it. I know. So today’s title, the Fifth of May, and any other title you see, IS original.
The day started off a bit hectic today. As I was getting ready to leave to work, I went in my closet to put on my Cubs hat. I probably wear it a couple times a week to work, especially when I’m in need of a haircut aka shave of my bald head. Today was definitely one of those days, so when I opened my closet, and didn’t see my Cubs hat, I started freaking out. Where the heck was it? Did I leave it on top of my dresser? Maybe it was on the dining room table. Did I leave it at work? All thoughts that raced through my head. I checked the first 2 locations with no luck, and was pretty confident I didn’t leave it at work. So where did that leave us?
I had stopped at my parents’ house earlier this week; maybe it’s there. As I dialed, and as my mom answered, I remembered where it was. It was hanging in their hallway, and she confirmed. OK, deep breath… let me go on with my day.
Cinco de Mayo was the day. Growing up in the Heart of Chicago, Pilsen for those of you who don’t know that term, there was a parade down Cermak every year. One of my oldest friend’s birthday is today, and lived right on Cermak; one year it was vodkas and lemonades for all! He just turned the big 4-0… the same fate I will have in about 3 and a half months. That’s pretty crazy when you think about it. I normally don’t, but when I do, and think I’m going to be 40… it’s pretty mind boggling. Where did all the time go?

After the neighborhood parades, there were some other historic Cinco de Mayos. I celebrated in Charlotte one year. I was down there for work and remember watching the Blackhawks in the playoffs vs the Canucks. Yeah, 2010 was the year, and Byfuglien was the star of that series. Hawks won.. good day. Another earlier year, it was the Mayweather De La Hoya fight. There are always a lot of good fights around this time; this year is no different. We probably will be tuning in somewhere to watch Canelo and Khan. That Mayweather De La Hoya fight was good… from what I could remember. I was in California at the time, BBQing outside my Burbank apartment, drinking 7/7’s out of a sports cup, from the early afternoon on…. Yeah, things got pretty ugly that night. A drunken mess is what I was.
But 2009 is the year that comes to mind the most… on that Cinco de Mayo, I proposed to my wife. We were into the whole running thing out in LA; I still try to go every blue moon. Back then, we were on it. We would run a nice uphill path through the Los Feliz neighborhood. Along the way, there was this beautiful courtyard; that was where I faked an ankle injury. After I yelled to get my wife to stop running, and come back and check on me.. I reached into my pocket. I popped out the ring and the question, and got the answer I was hoping for. Maybe not the most original proposal, but I thought it was nice.. it worked, so I guess that’s what really matters.
So how was this blog about Chicago sports? Oh yeah, the Blackhawks win back in 2010 on the way to the Cup… See, I did sneak that in there. And yeah, the missing Cubs hat this morning. OK, we got it covered. Happy Fifth of May… Now I need to find myself a Corona…
