OK, time to give that other baseball team in Chicago some love. It’s the Sox of course… the AL best Chicago White Sox, who currently sit at 19-8.
Who saw this coming? Talk about surprises to start the baseball season, the Sox have to be the biggest. I wrote this before, so I’ll say it again… some times, you’re just a year off. Heading into last season, the Sox had the big expectations… then flopped. This year, the expectations weren’t as great… in most people’s minds, but the team was basically the same.. and a year better. It’s been an unbelievable start.
Maybe the most improved player is Adam Eaton. Last year, he rated as the worst outfielder in baseball. This year, after a move to right field, he ranks as the best. Talk about the definition of most improved… you can’t improve more than that… it’s impossible… worst to first. He’s been leading a Sox team that has finally figured out how to play defense; a very underrated quality of a winning team. He’s flashing the leather all over the field, even if some of those great plays were caused by a late jump or misjudge. Talk about surprises…
One guy that is not a surprise is Chris Sale. He’s being himself… and that is one of the best pitchers in baseball. Quintana has been incredible as well… a truly underrated pitcher that doesn’t get nearly as much credit. Check his recent stats going back to last year; they’re impressive. Rodon… loved that draft pick when the Sox made it, and knew it he cleaned up his control, he could be good… and he has, and he is. Not many 1-3 pitchers better.

It’s that 4th guy that ranks up there with surprises. A pitcher grabbed off the clearance rack this offseason is turning into one of those favorite shirts. Latos has been sick. I don’t think he keeps it up, but so far so good. He has been another big reason the Sox have been so good. Now Danks on the other hand… the Sox finally made the hard decision… and by hard decision I mean because of the money… of sending him down. He’s been bad. Take away his starts, and put anybody else in there that wins a game or two, and we’re talking an even better record. Erik Johnson will get the first crack at it.
The Sox offense has been just enough. It’s pretty amazing those numbers that show runs by inning. It usually takes the Sox 6 innings to wake up, and then when they finally do, they pour it on. Hey, whatever it takes… and that’s what they’ve been doing.
Now a win against another first place team in the Red Sox… when does this dream start end? Does it? I figured they’d be OK, but never this. At 19-8, they are the American League’s best team, and for me, that is the biggest surprise in this year’s baseball season thus far. There’s only one other team that’s better in the majors.. yep, and they play in the same city. We’ll talk about them next.

as you noted, it sometimes takes them 6 innings to get it going. during last nite’s game they threw out a stat that a little over 50% of their runs thusfar have come in the 7th inning or later! without building big leads, that’s a pretty good way to win close ball games.

Maybe laroche leaving the sox was a good thing, huh? Get mad at kenny but solidify the ballclub. With sale leading the way, the sox have been a pleasant surprise…love the 80s uniforms, too! I guess it doesnt matter when you score the runs, but try not to play with fire too often…jumping on top early is never a bad thing. Looks like the al central could be the sox for the taking, and success on both sides of town is great for Chicago, and even better for baseball.
