April 30, 2016: Locked In

posted in: Bears | 1

Maybe there’s just nothing else to watch on this rainy day.  But for the 3rd straight day, I’m pretty locked in to the Bears draft.

I don’t typically pay this much attention to it.  I don’t know much about the college players.  Yet, for some reason, I’m trying to follow each and every pick this year.  Heck, I should have just drove down to be at the draft proceedings in person.

So I’m OK with the Bears first round pick.  Defense was the key there.  I also liked how they traded up.  They would do a lot of trading in this 2016 NFL Draft.  I like that too.  Regardless if we got our guy, or we were trying to wait for our guy, or maybe we ended up missing out on our guy, the fact that the Bears are busy… making moves… is what I like to see.  They’re aggressively trying to do something, which at the end of the day, should be bettering the team on the field, giving us something to cheer about, and returning to the playoffs.

Round 2 was another trading example.  They traded down twice I believe.  Then the Packers traded up, and leap frogged us in our final 2nd round position.  They took a Tackle from Indiana.  I didn’t think that’s who the Bears were going after, but when they traded down again, and ended up taking a Guard, I thought differently.  It sure feels like we were targeting Spriggs I believe his name is, and it sure feels like the Packers figured that out too, and swooped in and grabbed him.  I guess I didn’t like either pick.

Back to my defense, defense, defense philosophy in this draft.  I’m not opposed to taking another QB… which to this point the Bears have not done, but besides that, I want to stockpile that D, get young, and build something worthy of the Monsters of the Midway nickname.  So when they took the DE from Florida, I was happy again.  Then a Safety, then a CB, then a RB, then a LB, then another CB.  So I guess 6 out of 8 defensive picks is a good thing.

Don’t understand the OL pick, although I guess it’s pretty important to be deep there.  This game is won in the trenches, and another person to play there can’t be that bad.  Didn’t really seem like a big need on a team full of needs.  The RB pick figures I guess.  We had another RB remember, but let him walk… an all time Bear.  So we use a pick to get another one?  Whatever.  And we still haven’t addressed the backup QB situation; it’s not like we didn’t have a chance too.

The Raiders ended up taking Cook from Michigan State.  Yes, the Raiders, even though they have Derek Carr as their starter for the foreseeable future, still grabbed a top prospect.  Most teams by now should figure their starting QB will not play every game, and will need their backup to win a couple games.  So even in the 2nd easiest schedule this year, if Cutler goes down… hold on, when Cutler goes down, we have nobody else.  We’re not at the start of the season yet, but I hope this gets addressed, unless they think it already is, with Fales.

Still, Cutler hasn’t been the biggest ironman over the years.  He’s missed games.  If we had a decent backup, heck, to just win us 1-2 games, we may have made the playoffs in a couple of those years.  But no… nobody there… still, nobody there.

Although I am very happy with the offseason thus far, and love all the defensive picks in the draft, I feel like that one area still hasn’t been shored up.  I feel like it needs to be.  We need to have a Plan B for the most important position on the field.  Without it, we’re leaving ourselves wide open… unless that defense is ready to carry us again.  Maybe soon, but that would be a lot to expect going into this year.  So keep up the good work guys, but don’t forget about this one thing… the playoffs could depend on it.  Waiting to Bear Down again.

Bears have been getting good draft grades, and I agree with how they drafted, even though that does not matter at all. It will come down to these guys signing, working hard this summer, staying out of trouble, and performing on the field. The Bears focused on D but did not forget about the Oline and wr late, who I have read is being compared to wes welker and edelman…not too bad. We all know jay is still at the helm, but at least hoyer is the backup…just in case. Fangio and the Bears need to get back to being Monsters of the Midway, and these picks should help. BEAR DOWN!!!
