April 19, 2016: Role Reversal

posted in: Blackhawks | 2

Undisciplined hacks. At the beginning of this series, that was the term I used to describe the St. Louis Blues.  After watching game 4, there appears to be some role reversal going on.

This is not the Blackhawks I remember. These are not the never get flustered, always stay focused, performing under pressure, minimize mistakes, battle tested, defending Stanley Cup champions.  Where has that team went?

The Blues are a good hockey team. They did finish with more points in the regular season, not like that ever mattered. These are some well played, evenly matched contests. The Hawks could be even or up in this series just as easily as they could have been swept. When the games are this close, you can’t afford stupidity.

Bad penalties coupled with bad penalty killing and a good Blues power play hurt the Hawks. Ladd at the end of the 2nd. Of course Shaw at the end of the game. The Hawks always keep their cool, except now. Now, we’re one game from elimination.

Mistakes have hurt too. TVRs pass to Rozsival was careless. Rozsival has had a costly turnover. Penalties, mistakes, they add up quick in this second season.  The Blues have cashed those in.

Are you still confident?  Defiant maybe?  Still cocky?  I’m not. I’ve been humbled. I’m not giving up yet, but the Blues appear to be the better team right now. Do we have a season saving streak in us?

If we do, we’ll need that Blackhawks team that we know and love. That team full of skill and talent, with big stars that are clutch. That goalie who can stand on his head and carry us to a victory. We need that MVP of last year’s playoffs to rub off on his defensive crew. And what about that defender who set a career high in goals this year?  Or the guy with 499 goals on his resume?

I do agree with Coach Q though. No pressure now. It’s true must win, backs against the wall time. The key lies in 1 win. Win Game 5, bring it home, then let’s talk.

I’m ready for game 5. I’m not ready for the season to end. Go Hawks!

i like ‘q’ and his team. i think he really needs to come up with a new d plan for next year. and it looks like this team is content to be ‘every other year’ winners. they just don’t seem to have their collective hearts in these games. they show some spurts, but not the consistent play of a ‘hungry’ team.

Not sure why the Hawks have to dig themselves a hole to try and crawl out of, but if that is what it takes, so be it. The Hawks did it in 2013 vs the wings. They can do it again this year. Definitely not an ideal scenario, but it is what it is now. The Hawks have been playing mediocre, sloppy, stupid, and the big boys have yet to show up. All it takes right now is 1 game, 1 win at a time. Go get it Hawks, and come back to the UC ready to defend home ice and the Cup!
