April 7, 2016: Schwarby No

posted in: Cubs | 1

I knew it wasn’t good when it happened. My wife wondered how I knew; she said he looked like he was OK. I knew though.

Not because I’m a doctor, or not because I think the Cubs are cursed. I knew because Schwarber is a tough mofo, and he was in some serious pain. I knew because I’ve seen many of these injuries happen on the football field. I knew because they called out the cart to get him off the field; that’s never a good thing. I wish I was wrong.

After periodically checking in all day at work, I didn’t see any updates. The longer it went, the worse I thought.  As I walked towards the elevator out, my worst thoughts were confirmed. Schwarber had torn his ACL and LCL…  Schwarby No!!!

I was mad. I was sad. I couldn’t believe it could be so bad. (Too many Dr. Seuss books). I was pissed.  Yeah, the Cubs will be fine; they’ll still have a strong year…but THE year?  Hmm. I feel bad for Kyle. Seems like a great kid. His presence in this tight knit locker room and in the lineup will be missed. His clutch hitting aka 5 postseason HRs may be missed. Will we still be able to do it without him?  Will we do it for him?

It’s like a gut shot.  It’s one of those things that can ruin a season.  It’s certainly something that will test this much advertised depth. It sucks.

Bad things happen in life, and you try to get through them and move forward. Things that are much, much worse in the big scheme of things. But for a die hard fan…specifically a die hard Cubs fan, this is pretty bad.  This is up there in the worst things list when it comes to our sports addiction. How does this rank in all time worst injuries?  Do I hear a list coming?

I love what Kyle said.  “Can’t get mad about playing hard and getting hurt. Would rather play hard and get hurt then not play hard and not get hurt.”  Words you’d never hear from other star athletes in Chicago. But let’s just hope it’s one and done in this department. Overcoming one injury to a key cog is possible; don’t want to talk about another.   Go Cubs.

What a terrible injury to such a young talent. A few games into the season, and it is over before it could get going. Schwarbs will be missed…how much is tbd. Yes, yes, the curse is alive and well has already been told to me a few times. Funny how everything falls back on that and will continue to until the Cubs end it. Fine. The Cubs lost a mighty talent who was to play a huge roll in this historic year. The Cubs are deep enough to make due, and the season is young enough to recover. Schwarbs, you will be missed…rehab hard and come back stronger and better, but nothing derails this Cubbie blue train this year…NOTHING!
    GO CUBS GO!!!
