April 3, 2016: Individual Excellence

posted in: Blackhawks, Bulls | 1

Sunday was a day full of individual excellence.  Who took the cake?

Let’s start with the Blackhawks.  Many candidates here.  How about Patrick Kane with a hat trick for his 100th point of the regular season?  Not too shabby.  Flash back before the season began, and the controversy he was in the middle of.  That seems like a past lifetime at this point.  MVP of the league is very possible.  How about that rookie who has been slumping?  Well, he was just voted the NHLs #1 star of the week.  What was that slump everybody was talking about?  Yes, it was real, but this is too.  Any doubts on rookie of the year in the NHL should be erased now; we had him here all along.  And then there’s Coach Q… his 800th career victory.  I talked about this earlier in the year, but don’t see why Coach Q can’t win coach of the year, the same way Kane and Bread Man can win their awards.  What a day it was for the Hawks in their 6-4 win over the Bruins.  The only thing missing was a Hossa goal… which would have been his 500th.  With Kane’s 100th, Coach Q’s 800th, that would have certainly made for some kind of milestone hat trick.

Moving right along to the Bulls.  After a punch in the gut on Friday night vs Detroit, they basically need to win out… and need some help.  There’s one guy who has been leaving it out there as of late, and that’s Jimmy Buckets.  He’s been playing point guard for much of the last couple games, and been doing a pretty good job at it.  With his first career triple double coming in the loss Friday, including career highs in rebounds and assists, he did what he does best scoring big buckets down the stretch vs the Bucks on Sunday.  It should have been a blowout, but these are the 2016 Bulls we’re talking about here, so it became a game.  Butler hit shot after shot, with a big Holiday triple in the middle, to give the Bulls the victory.  Why didn’t we see this all year from Buckets?  Injuries played a part… some say he’s still not 100%, and I still can’t figure out why him and Rose can’t play well together, but I say it was a bit of an ego, or maybe identity problem.  If he kept his nose to the grindstone, and kept playing hard straight through, and let his play do the talking, I think he would have had a much better year.  He was trying to be the leader that the Bulls were missing… with Thibs and Noah gone… the verbal guy who spoke up about things; he failed in that aspect.  Lesson learned hopefully, and stick to what you do best.  But what about that leadership void?  Part of the reason the Bulls are where they are this year.

So some pretty good candidates on this Sunday April 3rd, but I have one that tops it, and yes, I am biased.  I’m going with a boy who turned 4 years old on this day.  He’s known by many names… Jimmy Buckets, Leonardo the Ninja Turtle, Simba from Lion King, Gil, Gio… the list goes on.  Whatever name he is going by these days, I know one thing:  he’s my son and he’s my superstar.  Happy Birthday Boy… you definitely take the cake.

Kane with his 2nd hat trick of the year. Basically, a 2 man race for nhl mvp with Kane and Ovechkin. Panarin should win rookie of the year. Coach Q can be coach of the year each year, but he probably gets overlooked because of the Hawks consistent winning and talent. Either way all of the nhl awards go, I am sure they would rather won another Cup, and I am ready for some playoff hockey. Time to defend the Cup…Go Hawks!!!
Butler and the Bulls bounced back with a win in Wrigley north. A trip to memphis is next against a team more banged up than the Bulls but still playing well.
Get that hoop up for the bday boy…maybe he can help practice the Bulls into the playoffs and delay the vacay!
